When and how did you introduce whole milk?

At what age and how did you introduce it? How much and at what times of the day, etc. ??? Did it work out. Not work out? Pros/cons. Any info. would be helpful. My DD is 10 mos. old. She sometimes has a bite of my cereal with no problems so far. Some days she has no interest in her formula whatsoever. She eats regular "people" food, drinks juice and water at mealtimes. Wondering if I can go ahead and slowly start her on it. Ped says 12 mos.....

You should wait a little longer to start her, like your ped said she should keep getting formula until 12 months. DD wouldn't take milk straight so in the past week or so we would make her bottle part formula part milk until it was all milk.

I would wait until Atleast 11 months to start, Introducing it too early can cause iron deficiency anemia and that is the main cause for it in infants that age.

I started doing a few oz in with his formula but our pedi said you don't even have to do that. So after we got to half and half I just started giving him all whole milk.

That's how we switched over, too. I waited until DS was around a year old.

At around 11 months, I believe, SO gave DS a sippy cup of milk when he got him a McDonalds Happy Meal one night.. Ugh.. Lol Anyways, DS loved it and had no problems.. We kept him on formula though and didn't do milk again until 12 months.. When he was 12 months we just started giving him straight whole milk and he was fine.. A week later I packed away all his bottles and gave away what formula we had.. I was so surprised by how easy the transition from bottles and formula to sippy cups and whole milk was, I worried I didn't do it right! Lol But his pedi said we did it just fine!  

i was wondering about all this too. DD is going to be 9 months in a few days, so i know it's coming up. i'm also having some issues with her using her sippy cup, though. she can use it just fine, but she doesn't LIKE to hold it. she doesn't mind it at all and we finally found one that is easier for her to hold and doesn't leak (superrrr excited about that! haha) and i've literally SEEN her hold it and let herself get a drink, but she doesn't like to. she'll do it for like a minute or so and that's it. should i just keep practicing with her? when did your kids start effectively using sippy cups?

Omg DS was exactly the same!! I tried soo hard to ebf but sadly had terrible supply issues.. So I had to start supplementing.. But I did not want give up my bonding time with him EVER! Hah so even when he was 9 months+ I would hold him and his bottle when he ate! Lol so when we started introducing sippys at around 9 months he would REFUSE to hold it!! He was like um, no YOU hold it for me duh! He is now almost 16 months old and a sippy pro!   I would say around 12 months is when he really started getting used to a sippy cup and holding it himself! I remember when we first started introducing them I thought he would NEVER use them! We even stopped trying to give him one for a while and then when we tried again he just got the hang of it!

how did you get him to really start using it?

I really dont know honestly.. And we had a few different types of sippys back then so I don't even remember which one he really started getting used to first! We had ones with no handles but like little grips and went in where the handles would normally be, and we had ones with handles as well.. We pretty much just gave them to him over and over and refused to hold them for him.. So basically just gave them to him over and over I guess? Lol

Well my son was the same way at first! He started trying to drinking out of my water bottle (which has a straw) around 5 months. I decided to buy him some sippy cups then. He wouldn't hold it up on his own for awhile but he would pick it up and drink from it occasionally. I would put water in it at that age. But I really started giving it to him on a regular basis around 8 or 9 months and I would give it to him everyday to try and drink out of whenever I would feed him baby food. I would give him watered down motts for totts juice in it.

I think giving it to him every day helped get him use to it and now he drinks out of them fine. He is 12 1/2 months and he doesn't use a bottle anymore either! Some of them he wont drink out of though, so you kind of have to find which one your baby will like. I would buy maybe 1 of each and see which one she prefers!

i just got the nuk one and i love it because it doesn't leak. she has drank out of every single one i have bought for her, but didn't try to hold them all. she has held this one and one playtex one we bought. this is the only one we have bought that doesn't leak and she really seems to prefer the spout on this one (it's one of the soft ones like bottle nipples).

Yes my son preferred the softer spouts at first too! Id say those are the best to start out with. He really likes the tommee tippee hard spout ones now. We get those from target and they don't leak! He has nuby soft spout that leak now but I think its just because they are older.

After her 9 month check up.

I poured her a sippy of 125ml of whole milk to start with and after every few days I upped it a bit, she is 11 months today and drinks anywhere from 1-2 8 oz bottles of whole milk, and sometimes some extra at meal times.

She is still taking 40oz of formula a day too.

I never mixed it all, with formula. Just straight whole milk.
