Putting things in her mouth

posted 4th Jan
Is it normal for a 3 year old to start putting things in her mouth all the time?

I mean, with the boys they both put anything and everything in their mouths when they were babies. Then they grew out of it. My daughter, she's always been a finger sucker, but she never really stuck objects in her mouth. But all of a sudden she is now.

Rocks. Paper. Cards. Coins. Wrappers from her straws or snacks.

And she's been chewing on things too. Her stuffed Minnie Mouse that she loves, she's been going to town on her ear and nose. Her sleeves. My sleeves. The edge of her blanket.

Is that weird? I'm not sure if that's a normal 3 year old thing or an autism thing. Either way it's frustrating. Especially when she makes herself gag on them.

DD is 3 also and does that. She also walks around the house with her bankie in her mouth chewing on it.

My son is 5 and does the same, he even chews his fingers to the point of bleeding. I am not 100% sure if its an ASD or a sensory thing either

Yes.
I have a 10 yr old that puts stuff in her mouth. Try breaking that habbit. lol

Some ppl just get or have oral fixations, and nothing can change it. But with a 3 yr old, it more then likely will pass, its just a face. for most kids.

SO's cousin's son is about to be 3 and puts evvvverrrything in his mouth. i'm not sure if it's because he's Autistic, or if it's just a 3 year old thing.
i have been told that some Autistic children like to chew on things. they even make these rubber mallet looking things for them to chew on, but idk.

I don't know if it's a sensory thing or not. My 6 year old chews the hell out of his shirts. Like to the point where he's chewed holes in his collars. And he wasn't one to put things in his mouth as a baby besides the pacifier. He has sensory issues. BUT he refuses to wear chewelry or chew on a rubber teething ring because it's embarrassing. So we've just had to try to catch him in the act and keep it from happening. He comes home from school with his collar and sleeves all wet and chewed up.

Look up chewelry. They have websites that sell it including amazon. She may or may not grow out of chewing but at least she won't be chewing up stuff that isn't meant to be chewed on.

Ohh, I'm definitely going to check into that. It's so weird, because it's usually just been finger-sucking until recently.

Her speech therapist had mentioned getting her a chewy tube once before. I might ask her about that again too.
