Tummy sleepers

posted 4th Jan
LO is a week old today and I find he sleeps best when he is on his tummy. I only put him on his tummy if I put him on the couch or something when I can watch him. When he's in his bassinet I sleep him on his back, coz I'm paranoid that he will turn face down and suffocate or something.
All the midwives here are so against it, and say to only sleep them on their backs. Anyone else have their LO's sleep on their tummys with every sleep?

The hospital had my dd on her tummy right from birth. So thats what she liked and we did it at home, when she came home at 7 days old. She is only a tummy sleeper.

Ok so am I just being paranoid that he will suffocate during the night if I leave him on his tummy?
I feel stupid asking, but both my other two I had sleep on their sides.

My kids have slept on their tummies since they were born!
honestly, which ever position your child sleeps best. They go back and forth and change it every single damn year what is the "safest"
Just make sure nothing around or under the baby that could suffocate them.

My kids slept on my every single night until they were 6 months old lol so tummy sleeping was easy.

My LO started sleeping on his tummy when he was 3 weeks old. I waited until he was strong enough to pick his head up and move it from one side to the other.

My LO slept on his side at first, but startled awake easily. I tried him on his tummy and he sleeps much better. My other two LO were the same, slept better on their tummies. My LO is 7 weeks old and can turn his head very easily when he is on his tummy, so I have no worries. Besides...we all slept on our tummies when we were babies. What is considered "safe" changes every day...for the longest time it was tummy, then back, then side, then back...changes constantly...lol. But it is what ever you feel comfortable with. I have those breathable bumper pads in his crib, so that gives me peace of mind.

my mum slept all 5 of us on our tummies and we're all still here! and dexter from week 2 has been hard to stop from rolling onto his tummy. he just likes it better on his belly so i just let him. if i tried to turn him he'd shout all night. lol. but his always been amazing with lifting his head up. I was worried at first but got over it pretty quick.

My LO is 12 weeks now and would always sleep best on his tummy laying on the couch never his back.. Come to find out it was his bassinet he just hated sleeping in it bc we tried his crib out for a night and he slept so peaceful and needless to say so did momma lol so my LO was put in his crib at 2 weeks.. I guessing just waisted money on a bassinet lol.

I allowed Alice to sleep on her side and tummy as long as I was awake. If it was nighttime I didn't allow it. I don't see harm in it as long as you are being safe and watching her.

Thanks for all the input. I might test him out during the day for a bit until I'm comfortable enough to let him sleep on his tummy during the night.
Do you think it would also help with wind? Like coz sometimes he won't bring up his wind after a feed, and he grunts and groans while he's on his back.

I did the exact same thing. My husband and I were both tummy sleepers as babies.

We started with DD on her back, being first time parents we are terrified of SIDS... but she got to the point after about a week or so of being home where she would only sleep for 10-30 minute intervals then wake up crying and it was hell. We tried sleeping her on her side, but she'd roll on her back and we'd have the same problem. Finally, we gave in and let her try her stomach... she sleeps so much better now, and longer. I'm still scared of SIDS, so I'm always listening out to hear her little groans and squeaks to make sure she's okay, and I check on her a lot, but she seems fine so far. It's nice to know others are doing tummy sleeping when that's what their baby wants and I'm not alone on this one.

Also, she absolutely HATES swaddling. I mean, just putting her in the sleep sack or swaddled up makes her get so mad lol. We've taken to tucking a blanket in around her while she's sleeping and keeping it well below chin level. She's been fine so far, three weeks along today. They change what's 'best' for baby so much that I'm not sure if they even know for sure.

Your instincts will kick in as a mom, so do what you think is best for your LO!
