I think he was reckless in his decision to donate sperm to people outside of the proper venues and should be subjected to pay child support. I get he was trying to be a nice guy but if this guy wins every dude could claim they were just passing off sperm as a favor. The laws are there for a reason and he should've gone about donating sperm the legal way and not through a craigslist ad.

The state is making her go after him(she tried to apply for assistance). I totally agree with you though about them making a foolish decision by using Craigslist to find/be a sperm donor.

If he donated illegally, then I guess I could see them laying charges for that (provided there isn't a statute of limitations). But no, I don't think he should be responsible for child support. It sounds to me like the couple was applying for benefits, and some states require mothers to file for child support in order to get benefits. Hopefully they will dismiss his case.

I think it would be different if he had actually had sex with her. No guy that knocks somebody up should be able to claim he was a sperm donor if they had sex. I'm not saying it wasn't stupid (and illegal), but its not really in comparison to a deadbeat dad.

You open a can of worms though by allowing him off the hook. I know it is different but that doesn't mean guys won't claim that there was no sex involved.

I also think it was a poor decision on his part to not ensure that this couple was financially secure before handing over his sperm.

Err.. no...if a man who signed a contract saying he surrendered his rights to the sperm or baby born from it, and he gets out of paying child support, not every dead beat piece of crap will be able to claim the same unless they also have a signed copy of the contract with the mother's signature on it O.O

He signed away his rights and responsibilities to the child. So no not all dead best dads could claim the same. Also financial issues come up sometimes. They could have been financially secure at the time.

But he signed a contract. So it isn't really going to open the door for deadbeats to claim sperm donation. No woman in a consenting sexual relationship with the father of her child is going to make him sign a contract saying he's donating his sperm.
