What to do, constipation issue

posted 3rd Jan
My 5 year old hasn't pooped in about 5 days. I'm not entirely sure how long it's been since she goes to the bathroom and wipes on her own and doesn't usually keep me informed on her bowel movements, but she said the last time she thinks she went was at my grandma's house, so, 5 days.

I just gave her a huge glass of prune juice. How long should I wait to see if she'll go and what step should I take next? A suppository? Enema?

At work we have to give prunes, and the next day give a suppository, and the next day give them an enema, but those are for adults who mostly have a lot of health issues as to why they're not having regular bm's and we'd never let them go 5 days without one, so idk if I should follow the same thing or what....

I'll call her doc in the morning but it's almost 8pm now.

these work great. DD should go immediately after use.

We used those when she was a newborn once, I think I barely got it out of her bum before she went. Well, not THOSE, but that brand for newbs.

How long should I wait to see if the prunes work before getting them?

Prunes can take anywhere from 2 to 12 hours.

If she is in pain I would go ahead and get them. It won't cause any problems with having already given her prunes. But if she is feeling okay I would wait it out until tomorrow.

I'd give it until morning, personally. If she wakes up and still hasn't gone, then try a laxative.

Try Pedia-Lax chew-ables if the prune juice doesn't work.

She said her tummy hurt, but not bad and she's asleep now so I don't think she's in that much pain. So I guess we'll see if she goes tonight and if not try in the morning.

Thank you for the help!

Of course. Constipation sucks! DS has been having trouble with it lately. He is only 6 months though and doesn't understand. Poor guy...

Do you have any soothing wipes or a peri bottle? Her little butt is going to hurt after that, even if it's soft.

We have a peri bottle but I should probably go get some witch hazel pads, thanks!

I would try a chewable laxative before an enema, I hate using them on young children they seem so extreme to me. (Unless, of course, a dr reccomends).

Also, are you sure she is drinking enough water? I have found that when my kids don't drink enough water they get stuffed up.
