Getting Baby Off Bottles
posted 3rd Jan
Oh, wow its been a long time since I last posted. I'm back now for good, I've missed the site.
So, LO is now 7 months old & she's cutting teeth (she is doing pretty well), I want to start switching her to the hard plastic sippy cups. I've heard so much about babies teeth and rotting because of bottles. Guess my question is ; yay or nay?
I personally can't imagine having a one year old carrying around a sippy cup and biting holes in it.
Oh yeah, I realize every child is different but share stories, please?

Their teeth dont rot because they have a bottle their teeth rot when they are put down with milk or juice and it sits on their gums and teeth. That being said there is no harm in starting the transition to the cup. The earlier the better IMO. I have a 2 year old on a bottle and it was hell. Just start introducing the cup make sure they always have one accessible with like water in it. Then start replacing the bottle with the cup for feedings. I save nap and bed for last.

We put DS on a sippy cup at 12 months and it was no drama at all, they don't have hard tops but are much thicker then bottles but he doesn't bite when he teethes anyways.

Lol dd never bites holes in her sippies! I mean I think 7 months is a little young to get rid of the bottle but it's a good time to introduce a sippy! Good luck

I switched my daughter to a sippy cup when she started being able to hold her own bottle and would bite down on the nipples even though she had no teeth until one year. I switched her to the training cups at 6 months and then to the plastic once she got the hang of it. She would drink juice out of it but refused to drink milk out of them for about a month. I just kept offering it to her and eventually she realized the bottles were gone.

My son weaned himself from bottles before he turned 10 months. He just ecided he wanted sippy cups instead so I didnt offer bottles anymore. We started with the soft sippies, then transitioned to hard, then thermos style, and now he doesnt get them at all.
My daughter was pretty much the same story at almost 11 months. I gpt her to take it for a nap and bed and then didnt offer them anymore.

i switched my daughter from bottles to sippy cups strictly, at 1. she just didn't want a bottle anymore. we introduced the sippy cup at about 6 months old, but we did bottles and sippy cups then.

i just read that its time to get my baby off the bottle and shes 18mos. shes has sippybcups with soft nipples though. she wont drink from the hard ones. the main issue is having the baby sleep with the bottle in their mouth because the bacteria will eat at teeth. i think 7 mos is too early to take of but i guess it depends on your baby. if you're worried about teeth, you can get a finger brush. my baby loved it and now uses an elmo toothbrush.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking.

7 months is a great age to start introducing a sippy but not to completely take it away. my son got off his exactly a week after his first birthday and it was no problem at all and he has these beautiful white teeth but i have also been brushing his teeth since he starting getting them

My youngest is 11 months now takes a sippy just great. When she is over being sick the bottles are going the trash. Sometimes its trial and error to find the right cup though so be prepared to go through a lot.

My son is 2 and still on the bottle. Its his comfort thing. But he is only drinking water in it at night and his teeth are fine. Just never put your baby down with juice or milk. But at only 7 months you got plenty of time for transition. My son never ever chews through the nipples.

I'm going to reply to all at once. I was thinking just to start her off with them now not completely take them away. I understand that some mothers & babies prefer the bottle for a little while longer then others. Just saying for me I can not see her walking around with a bottle (no offense). I'm a 1st time momma & just learning as I am going. Thanks you guys for input
