Put all the way out for c-section

posted 3rd Jan
If you're bored and feel like reading a lengthy, tear-jerking, horrific labor/delivery story, follow the link to my blog on my page. To make it short, I had an emergency c-section about 2.5 years ago. The kind of life or death emergency where I got cut open without any drugs. I felt everything and spent some time in therapy for PTSD. Anyways...I'm due in March and will sadly be having a scheduled c-section. It's not what I wanted to do but it's almost impossible to find a Dr. around here that support VBAC's. I told my Dr. several times that I don't think I can emotionally and physically handle going through another c-section awake after what happened. It's just too traumatic. They told me they would encourage me to be awake but they would knock me out if that's what I wanted to do. My question is - has anyone been put all the way out for a scheduled c-section? What were the pros and cons?

Sorry I'm not able to answer your questions. I wanted to tell you I remember reading your story before you wanting to avoid c-section because it was traumatic for you. I hope you have a much better experience with the next one.

I'm so sorry that happened to you
Anyway I was just talking to a girl on here about c sections. She was put to sleep for her first and wasn't for her second and she said it was much better being awake and being able to see/ hold her baby etc.
When she was put to sleep I'm assuming she was extremely groggy even after they woke her up and didn't get to experience her baby as a brand new newborn.

This is exactly what she said "When I went in for my second csection I was in and out of there within an hour. Fully awake,I actually got to see my child when she fresh. Lol. It was waaay better than my first."

I had to be put completely under for an emergency csection 12 years ago with my daughter. They did two epidurals and then a local. I felt it when they went to cut me and I screamed at them so they put me out entirely.

If you've never been put under, it is very disconcerting. You usually feel like total smurf when you wake up but it fades within half an hour. You feel hung over but it fades and I barely remember it, even from my recent surgery in april. Aside from that, it's great. I had a little problem at first believing my daughter was mine but I got over it in a day lol They just encourage you to be awake for the bonding thing but you manage without it just fine, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Ah, thank you. I'm 95% sure I want to be knocked out. The only thing that I'm bummed about it is missing his first cry and seeing him for the first time.

I've never been put out. But I can tell you a planned c-section is not nearly as frightening as an emergency. The anticipation sucks. But once you're there it really isn't that bad. But I have a question. They didn't put you out once they realized you could feel everything?

Can you ask your OB to let you make the decision at the time of the c section? You may change your mind last minute and decide you do want to be awake, or you cant handle it and dont. I mean you dont want to be having a panic attack, but what if you are fine? You wont know until you're actually IN that moment.

They didn't have time to numb me bc my baby girl was dying so the actual first cut and getting her out - I felt. When it was time to be stitched back up, they got me out but apparently I had so much adrenaline that I kept waking up during the whole thing. It was a friggin nightmare. My Dr. keeps telling me the same thing though, that a planned c-section is going to be so different. It's just so scary to think about...

Thats just it, I could calm myself down enough to get me in the room but once it's all about to start I'm afraid I'm going to have a panic attack and freak out lol Idk what to do

They strap you down to the table and knock you out, you won't be able to get away if you wanted to ;)

I got put under for my first csection..my platelets were low.

I woke up in terrible pain.. I couldnt get up and move for two days. I was all weird with my son until the day after I had him..it was like someone just handed me a baby and said here he is yours.. I was unsure he was mine sort of..if that makes sense?

I also got stuck with that stupid catheter for days which was awful.

My second cesarean..was awesome. I got to see my son as soon as he was out.. had surgery at 7pm..was up walking by 7am. I stayed numb for a few hours after surgery, so I wasnt in that much pain.

I was still able to nurse both kids successfully..so that was never an issue.

You should definitely talk to your OB and see what your options are. I'm not inside your head, but I *think* I would try to go for it awake but only if I had the option of anesthesia at the last minute.

That does make sense. I felt the same way when I had her. They took her from me as soon as they got her out and rushed her to the NICU. I didn't actually see her for 2 days and so the bonding was awkward, like you said, it was like someone just handed me a baby and said here ya go, she's all yours. Anyways...so you're saying it wasn't that bad the 2nd time around? You'd do it again?
