Filing taxes....?

posted 3rd Jan
I have a question.

To file your taxes together, you have to be married right?

My fiancé and I have been together for almost 7 years and we have lived together for close to 2 yrs. The past year I did NOT work because of having our newborn and being in nursing school. However I did work for 2 months in between semesters so I would have that to include in my taxes and all of my financial stuff for school.

Could he claim me as a dependent? I have read a little bit about people doing that. I don't even know if that is possible since I did work for 2 months.

Or would we be better off just doing our own separately? Would it matter who claimed our son? Obviously I was thinking we would choose based on how much we got back.. Thanks!!

I would file separate and have him claim the child. You most likely did not work enough to file for the child tax credit.

if together you both made over $19,000 then you can file married/joint. you have to be married, though.

have him file head of household and claim the both of you (as long as you made less than $9500).

My Dh claimed me and my son when I was in a very similar situation. You don't have to be married, but he should be able to prove he provided at least half the support and you should sign off on it if you go to a preparer in person

Im pretty sure I only made 2000 -2500. So he could claim me as a dependent? Would I still have to put in my w2 info and my school forms as if I were filing separately?

It's pretty easy. He just has to file as head of household. Talk to someone like at H&R block or whoever about what forms you need to fill out. You definitely need your W2 and student forms. I worked 8 months out of that year and that's what we did. I had to quit because of a 2nd pregnancy and school. It's legal and we've never had an issue with it.
