Quoting I'm Marbles:" Inflation is ONE of the reasons. THEFT is ANOTHER. You mean to tell me, if someone came in the store ... [snip!] ... a stole lets say a box of tampons. The store would be at a loss for those tampons eventually and the price of them WILL go up."

Maybe in that particular store, but not as a whole. I thought you were talking about the bigger picture, not specific stores.

I'll probably get smurf for this but I would tell an employee. There's no excuse for theft. I've actually done this before at a local drug store. I saw two girls cracking open packages of cosmetics and putting nail polish in their purses. I walked up to the front counter, told the manager, and she said thank you. She watched them for a while on a camera to make sure it was actually happening and then called the police. I didn't stick around to see if they were arrested but I imagine they probably got a stern talking-to at the very least. They were about 18 years old so they probably got arrested for shoplifting. They didn't look like they were starving and they were wearing nice clothes. I didn't feel sorry for them one bit.

Business lose billions of dollars every year in the U.S. because of shoplifting. Some people justify it by saying big corporations like Wal-mart can stand having people steal from them constantly but that doesn't make it right. It's especially rotten when people steal from small business that really depend on every cent they make.

Quoting Heeeeeey, Sexy lady. ;):" I guess not in all stores. I worked in a store when I was 15 and a lot of people would come and open ... [snip!] ... smurf from Walmart gets stolen every single day and if anything their prices are always going lower. At least the ones in HERE. "

what an ignorant statement. of course the prices go up. Not each time it happens..but over time the company will recover it's loss.

I'd do nothing...but only because there's nothing that could be done. I've managed a retail store before... unless I physically as an employee saw someone steal... and kept them in my eyesight until the police arrived- there was nothing I could do. So, as a customer, I'm not endangering myself and my kids by pissing off a low life when nothing could be done about it anyway.

It depends on what they are stealing. Food or water? Yea, not going to say anything most likely.

OMG to those saying that prices don't go up due to theft!
Of COURSE theft is factored in to prices just like fraud is built in to other costs like insurance. Nothing is free. When someone receives something for "free," illegally or legally, those paying for the product or service are paying for it.
When there is more theft / fraud, the business makes less profit and/or shifts the burden to the consumer. Usually it doesn't take long for the business owner to realize the degree of losses and raise the prices.

stores pass the loss of that profit, as well as the original cost of the stolen merch, onto the customers by way of higher prices. they could have their liability insurance carrier absorb the losses, but that causes their insurance rates to go up, and you guessed it - their merch prices as well.

eta: and i probably would tell an employee, unless it was obvious that the person really needed the stuff for their family. in that case, i'd probably buy it for them.
