Joining the National Guard

with a baby. (8mo), whats your views?
My brother always wanted me to, he passed away in Afghanistan on deployment. I want to be medic. Front line. I know its one of the most dangerous and rewarding jobs in the military. I want to save someone else brother so some other girl doesn't have to get the same phone call I did. I want to make my brother proud. I want to better my life for me and my DD.

BUT....

I'm scared to lose my life, I'm scared my mom will take hers if I enlist. Im scared SO wont wait for me. I'm scared to leave toots.

I haven't made a decision on talking to a rectruiter yet because I know its a life altering decisons.

Just looking for some other mamas thoughts on it...

Seems to me like you're doing it for your brother and not for yourself.

Either way, those are all thing that could or could not happen. Think about whether you could live with yourself or not if anything like that happened. If yes and if it's something you really want to do, go for it.

OP I'm very sorry for you loss. It's absolutely tragic. I was a combat medic in the Army. It's tough I can't imagine doing it for anyone but myself.

Also the Army is over manned. They aren't taking as many people it will be harder for you to get in right now.

Was it rewarding? I want to for him honestly but I want to better myself. Granted I'm starting college this month, I can't support myself since my seasonal job ended. I just want the best life possible for DD

It was in some aspects, soul stealing in others. Do you have any college? IMO stay in school get at least an AA under your belt so you can go in at a higher rank. NG isn't full time so you can't support your little family with it btw.

Yea I was thinking that. && I know I can't support them of it, but it would be a lot of help.

We're just in a tough spot. Tougher then before. We have no assistance (got cut off) and SO just started a job but its a temp :/ I'm trying to go to school and get some type of degree cause min wage isn't cutting it anymore.

Idk I just want to make a difference.

Short term it might sound good but try thinking long term. I went in as an E-3 from having just an AA. I couldn't imagine being an E-1 with a kid to support.

I hope you make a decision that is comforting and empowering to you either way
