re: Multiple sets of twins D&D

posted 2nd Jan
One of my friends in PA has that in his family. His Aunt has 2 sets of identical twins, 2 boys 2 girls. All kids were conceived naturally with no intervention.
I'd probably cry if it happened to me. lol

How is that possible? Not challenging, genuinely curious. I thought the only way to influence identical twinning was IVF and frozen embryo transfers.

Nothing influences identical twinning, they don't know what causes it to happen. It's not genetic or influenced by anything, just a fluke though you have to wonder if there's something they haven't caught yet when identical crop up multiple times in a family.

That's what I was thinking, maybe something new or really obscure I hadn't heard about. IVF does actually influence identical twinning but not by a large percent. That's how most women doing IVF conceive triplets or more. (Most women doing IVF don't conceive triplets but when they do it's because of IVF)

Really? Where did you read that? Just curious. Everything I've read says that IVF treatments and fertility hormones haven't had any affect on identical twinning and that birth rates remain the same, 3 in every 1,000 or something like that.

True.

ahh... not sure, out of my area of expertise.

My understanding is....with mo-mo twins, the fertilized egg separates AFTER the amniotic sac is formed. The twins shared the same sac and placenta. Mom was put on on bed-rest very early on in the pregnancy, almost constant monitoring, and they delivered the babies when she was around 27 weeks.

Anyhow, the specialist told her chances of having another set of mo-mo twins was about 90%.

No fertility treatments, btw... she was only 19 when she got pregnant.

My RE first told me about it and I further researched it online. The inner cell mass (the part that becomes a baby) of fresh IVF blastocyst embryos tend to collapse and and then re expand and frozen ones always do (that's why it's more common for identical twins to occur in frozen cycles than fresh). When the inner cell mass of a blastocyst re expands it sometimes creates a new trophectoderm which then sometimes creates a new and identical inner cell mass (the baby part) and at that point identical twinning has occurred.

It's still rare for identical twins to occur this way, just less rare than naturally occurring identicals.

Wow. I've never heard there could be a genetic link.
