Why are they screening so early?

He went for a speech evaluation in July and she thought maybe he was autistic. He has a speech delay and also a sensory disorder if that matters.

My friend's son was diagnosed last year at 4. She took him to a doctor just before he turned 3 and he said that it was too soon to do anything because it could just be learning difficulties and behavioural issues

My son is 5, way behind in school with speech delay among other things and they won't test him until he completes 1 year of school to see if he "outgrows" any of it.

Is this just the opinion of his pedi? Honestly, I would get a second opinion. They really don't recommend diagnosing autism until at least four.

Hmm that's weird. I'm not sure why they'd do it so early then. I did a huge packet with information and he qualified for the testing. That confuses me.

We were sent to the speech evaluation because of his pedi but then the evaluator had us sign up for therapy and the autism screening. He is in speech therapy and OT right now.

They will watch him play, see how he responds to different tasks, talk to you a lot. And yes, you will find out same day, before you leave. And because he is so young, if he does get a diagnosis there are programs available to age 3 through early intervention.

They are testing so early, because there are better outcomes with children who are diagnosed early. You have a good care team who know what they are doing.
