A secret life insurance policy?

posted 2nd Jan
DH and I are purchasing our own life insurance policies. I have a small one through work and we didnt think he had any. His dad had mentioned in the past how he bought DH one through the military before he got out. They were over our house last night and I mentioned it, asking if he did have one. His dad said yes, never made eye contact and changed subject. So, DH has a secret li policy that we know nothing about. The amount, beneficiary, policy, nothing.

Do you find this odd? He is 30, weve been married 3.5 years and have lived on our own for like 6.

Ive never heard of parents purchasing secret policies for their adult, married children.

Im pretty irritated about it and DH doesnt get why theyre so hush about it.

What the smurf? Would you be kinda mad?

I don't really find it odd that his father started a life insurance policy, but I do find it a little strange that he will not talk about it. Perhaps he is afraid that you guys will take it as if he was betting for his son to die? I don't know.

a lot of people buy "secret" policies...the person doesn't have to know you have it out on them and they don't even need to be related to you...

Did you guys press the issue at all? If I was DH, I would make sure to find out the details

No, my parents have a life insurance policy on me that I know nothing about.
I think it's worth about 200k and they keep it with themselves as the beneficiary incase anything ever happens to me.

I don't know anything about it. My husband knows nothing about it.

your husband was in the military? regardless. i dont think so. it is about 3 grand to have someone cremated, on top of that, you have to worry about past debt, a service and what not, i think it is normal if not smart. i just watched my friends family go through losing their son, the expense of it was difficult on top of the emotional loss.

I worked for an insurance company for several years, I I don't find it odd.

Nothing against you, but as a parent you never know how long your child's relationship will last, and its never a bad idea to have a back up plan for "just in case" instances. You never know what will happen.

Example. You and your husband pass away at the same time. Your secondary beneficiary on your policies are your kids. If grandparents are left to raise the kids they cannot touch that money, and only when the kids turn 18 will they have access to it.

Actually you do have to be related. There has to be an immediate relationship. Parent/guardian/grandparents.

My mom has a life insurance policy for both my brother and I. Its not odd at all. I have my own life insurance and I have insurance for the kids as well just in case something happens to them.

But why wouldn't you just tell the person you have the policy on? Like "hey we're doing this just in case".....

I think id feel differently if we knew something about it. He had life insurance while he was in the service, so its not like they took it out for that reason. Theyre very secretive and greedy so my assumption is this is for their benefit incase hed die. Which is way screwy because we have our own family thatd need money to survive if he passed.

I dont trust it really.

Some families struggle with finances but his doesnt. Theyre very well off and have a big chunk of cash at hand at all times- so its not like theyre afraid theyd struggle.

DH almost died like 5 years ago in an awful bike wreck. His parents were distant about it but pressed a lawsuit and everything bigtime. I just wanted DH alive. I faintly remember his dad mentioning to someone he has a big li on him. So again, it just seems more a greed thing..

Why would I? I don't plan on telling my son I have a life insurance policy on him. I have 200k on him and he is only 4. I will always have that money. If he ever dies before me I will get it.

He doesn't need to know. He should still carry his own policy.
