Mastitis
posted 1st Jan
Pretty sure I have it. I woke up with a sore right breast which has gotten progressively worse and now there's a hard wedge type shape at the top of my breast that feels engorged, stings, and the rest of my breast is soft. I also feel sick, weak, achy all over, the only thing I don't think I have is a fever, but I haven't checked but I probably should bc I'm get the chills. I really just don't feel like moving whatsoever bc any movement hurts my boob. How urgent does this need to be treated? I'm scared it will get worse, but it's late here and my only option is the ER. Ughhhhh I'm miserable

I would go to the er if you can't see your gp ASAP. You need antibiotics

I had mastitis and got rid of it by nursing LO constanly on that side...and when I wasn't nursing, I was pumping or using hot compresses and massage. Depending on the severity, you don't need anitbiotics. But, it isn't something to mess around with. BF as much as possible tonight, and if it's worse or not at least getting better by morning, then I'd go in. Good luck!

Thank you! I was too sick earlier to even think about spending hours in the ER so I just took a hot bath then later I took a hot shower and massaged my breast both times as hard as I could in the area, and I've been resting, drinking water, nursing her often, and taking Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I feel ten times better right now, and Im hoping it will continue tomorrow. My fever got up to 101.5 earlier but now Im clear. Ugh hoping its not bad again tomorrow so I can avoid going to the doctor!
Thanks ladies!

If you're already starting to feel better, then chances are it won't get worse. Also, don't massage too hard. The nurse I talked to when I had it said that can cause more harm than good. Just gentle massages to work the milk out is all you need to do. Even better if you can nurse on all fours, or get on all fours in the warm bath and massage. Let gravity help get the milk out
Glad you're feeling better!

Good to know! I will be more gentle! I had a fever again today when I woke up and my boob is getting more red as the day has gone on, but I got some antibiotics just in case so I'm hoping I'll be good in 2 days or so.

If you do end up taking the antibiotics, you will most likely end up with thrush....not the end of the world, but I hear it's a pain in the ass -- luckily, I've never had to deal with that. If you do get it, make sure you and LO get treated asap. As far as I know, thrush doesn't go away on it's own and will only get worse if left untreated.

I get it every time I take antibiotics. No huge deal. Take some inner health plus to avoid it or just use caneston cream if you get it. You can also get the caneston tablet now, 1 tablet and its gone in 24 hours. Mastitis is a lot worse

And my daughter never got it when I was breast feeding just because I had it. Not sure why she would need to get LO treated if mum has it...,

I've never had it, but I know that it's common for LO to get it in their mouth if mum has it. My sister and her LO had gotten thrush so bad, that she had to quit nursing. Hers wasn't caused by antibiotics though...maybe that's why her LO had it too? I'm really not experienced with thrush myself to know how it's caused/spread.

I've never had it in my mouth. I've heard the way to check is if they have white dots on their tongue? If she takes inner health plus or eats stacks of yoghurt that will go through breast milk an should protect LO.
Thrush sucks. It's annoying, but easy to treat in my case. Your sisters sounds terrible

My sister's LO had it in his mouth...she didn't have it in her mouth. They kept passing it back and forth to each other. It was bad
They got it right before he went through his 6 week growth spurt, and it hurt too bad to nurse him, so he wasn't able to up her supply...eventually, her supply just diminished and she had to give up.

Smurf, the things we do for our LO's huh?!? Lol mastitis and thrush = pain in my ass!!!!! Lol, I'm determined to keep BFing until she's at least 6 mos though. Is Inner Health just a probiotic?? And can it be any probiotic? I have yogurt here, but I cut dairy out of my diet

Yes it's a probiotic and any probiotic will do.
I had mastitis twice with LO and we bf until 10 months. You can do it!
