When you get a craving?

posted 1st Jan
What do you do when you get a craving for something you don't want to eat? My new years resolution was to give up candy, pizza and soda. The soda will be no problem, the pizza will be a little hard but ok as long as its not sitting around in front of me but the candy thing is already really hard and it hasn't even been a day yet. I want some sooo bad but the thing is, if I allow myself to have a small piece then I will only want it more! However, I can never get my cravings to go away until I indulge in them! So, what helps you?

I drink something like tea or water, or have a snack of mixed veggies.

When I quit smoking, I would try to breath through the cravings using yoga breaths. It actually worked most of the time. We tend to underestimate sitting down and taking a few minutes to collect our thoughts and take a deep breath!

Also- if it's chocolate candy, you can try milk. A lot of the time, if you crave chocolate, then your body is missing calcium!

Try to figure out WHY you're having the craving. Do you feel hungry? Try drinking a glass of water, milk or 100% juice, you might actually be thirsty. If you still feel hungry find a suitable substitute. If you're craving sweets, try eating a piece of fruit or some toast with jam/jelly. My personal fav is apples or toast with nutella or peanut butter. If you're craving salt, try some pita chips, crackers with cheese, or veggies with dressing. If you're eating because of impulse, boredom or whatever else try to occupy yourself. If the craving won't leave try eating a banana or drinking some tea.

Alot of our eating choices are made out of habit. If you find that you're still having a hankering for some candy, indulge in just a little bit. Find a small bowl to portion out your snack and eat it with your non-dominant hand.

I find it better just to indulge in a craving, but don't eat so much of it. I really wanted a pepsi at work from the machine but i told myself not to drink so much soda (not that I ever did, that much) now that I'm preg. I ended up eating m&m's, cookies, and all this other smurf a sugar rush from one pepsi, maybe not even a full can, would have given me. I never finish a whole can because by the time it's not cold anymore i don't want it. So I just give in to my cravings, if I don't I find myself pigging out on other smurf more than what I wanted in the first place.

YES!
I crave chocolate like crazy lately, and the craving always goes away when I drink milk! Figuring out why you are craving something can help sooooo much in making better food choices!

Thanks all you ladies for the replays!

Your comment especially helped me! I thought about it and wasn't sure if I was hungry so I tried the milk, like another lady suggested. That helped a little bit with the craving but then I realized my stomach was growling so I went to get something to eat. I ended up getting some carrots and a bottle of water and I feel a lot better now!
