elimination communication late starters

posted 1st Jan
I just started putting my 12 month old on the potty after I think she needs to pee. She is doing it! But has anyone else tried ec late like this? Any tips? I'm intrigued.

This is not potty training it is called elimination communication its not forcing your kid to go in the potty, its learning cues then your child teaching theirself.

We started kinda late but not at 12 months... but you can do it. One part that is important with the younger kids is to use a sign for potty, common is the ASL for poop.

That way the kids can sign when they need to go rather than you having to guess. The idea behind EC is not for you to have to guess each time, or put them on the potty every 30 min. but more for you to learn when she needs to go.

You might already know that a little. Also use your intuition and that can often help

I don't know a lot about starting at that age but I do know you can do it. We do it and it works for us and one of my friends started at 13 monhts and had her LO out of diapers by 16months.

I actuly just posted a question on this last night!

Good luck. you can find lots of info on line about EC

So do the poop sigh or just toilet sign? Lo won't sign anything but milk and I've been watching her but I don't see any signs right now. She has peed on the potty twice so far. I don't know any of her signs. How do I start learning them? Also I have two baby sitters. Will it be hard to get everyone on the same page?

this is the sign for bathroom(common used for EC)

We use the one for poop not the one for bathroom but kids can not do any of themit perfect. We also keep the potty in the living room and he use to crawl over to it when he was 7 or 8 months

Do you shake the sign or do it with a still hand? I'm afraid she will play with the potty in the living room. Thanks

You shake, there are different challenges when starting at 12 months. So that is why I can not offer that much help.

Babies are pretty good at just going in the diaper if you can't get them to a potty after you start. My LO sleeps in his diapers and sometimes will go in them if I don't take him soon enough.

Now when you are first starting any time you use the bathroom (if you bring LO) make sure you do the sign and say the "word", what ever key word you choose.

My lo stopped using the potty for number 2 at one point, this is because he like privacy when he goes number 2 now and he can not use the potty alone. So when he goes number 2 in his diaper I still say our key word and do the sign. Then he comes over to me and I change him.

Oh ok. Well I have been saying potty and momma is gong to the potty for about 5 months and she watches so she knows what it is. I just need to learn some cues.

I got your message! I knew you could do it. We started with the first thing after naps. MY LO stays dry most nights and naps but always has to go after. Then on the potty I do the sign and say pee pee or you can say potty
