Computer time

posted 1st Jan
If you allow your child to use the computer (for games), how long do you sloe them to be on it at a time? Does it depend on the type of game? Like, if they were playing an educational game versus just a random game?

Assuming we're talking about a preschool aged child.

Aiden has been playing on the computer lately, just on pbskids games like Super Why and Word World and whatnot. I started setting a timer for an hour of play, then he has to get off.

My 4 yr old is on right now. She has been on since 11am its now 1pm. She is on abcmouse.com.

Normally a time limit, but it depends on what the day is like. Its holidays right now so no time limit. Lol

I'm a mean, awful lady lol

I make my son earn game time..with good behavior, using manners, sharing with his brother, helping clean up, being self sufficient, ect. He gets 5 minutes per good deed. However, I only give him a set time limit. 20 minutes max.

I should say he got quite obsessive over games, complete with hissy fits, tears, boogers and all. With a time limit he has structure and he doesnt go all bats%&# crazy when I ask him to stop playing.

Occassionally, when he gets a new game or he has been good or needs distracting.. I will let him play freely. But he usually still freaks lol when he hears the beep when I set a timer, he is good. Positive reinforcement is awesome!

I do the same tho. If my kids act up they don't use it at all. They don't whine to get off tho. Never have either lol

Two hours isn't that bad.

I keep hearing about abcmouse, but I've never tried it.

I don't make him earn it, but I will give him extra time if he's being really good. And if he's not listening or bullying his sister, he won't get to play on it at all.

And I find that the timer helps with getting off too. He used to pitch a fit when I said time was up, but when I did the timer today (first time we used that) he just goes "Okay, time to turn it off"

Its awesome you need to pay monthly tho. Its 8.00 or 8.50 a month. Not bad IMO.

She is really good at the games its all learning games. Oh the first time I tried it was 30 day trial but you need to put in a credit card or PayPal account. After the free trial if you don't want to continue you have to tell them, it comes out automatically lol

That's not too bad since it's educational. I probably spend that much making flash cards and games at home anyway. I'll have to check it out.
