Most accurate temp

posted 31st Dec
My daughter is 7 months and I checked her temp rectally this morning and it was 100.1 (I checked it bc she was burning up) then after giving her Tylenol it brought it down to 99 something, but I just read that a normal rectal temp is 99.6 and a fever would be considered anything over 100.4? Is it really best to check it rectal?

I've always been told not to do it that way. We have always done it under their arms.

I think rectal is the most accurate but it's not always easy or comfortable. We always do DS's under the arm

So If her temp goes down to 99 something should I consider the fever gone? I know it says anything above 100.4 is considered a fever but it's obvious she's hot.. Even with it in the 99's

I've heard that once the baby is over a certain age it's okay to do it orally instead of rectally every time, but i feel that rectal is gonna be the most accurate and easiest way to do it either way.

In the emergency room I work at the pediatrician for the hospital and medical standard guidelines have us do a recital temp on anyone hot or complaining of a fever age two and under. Now of course in the come in there for something other than sickness such as hurt arm or something we just do under arm

To get the most accurate temperature you should do it rectally, especially with children 2 and under. It isn't a fever until it is 100.4 and up.

The only reason we don't do adult temps rectally is because it is invasive and we are suppose to take the least invasive/easiest route first.
