I never got around to getting nipple shields, my nipple ended up healing quickly and then the right one got bad but it healed quickly, too.

After every feeding, I expressed some milk and rubbed it on both nipples, let it dry then applied lanolin. After showers, I rubbed on some coconut oil. She's now nursing like a pro almost 2 weeks after birth. Finally!
