Getting Healthy in 2013

posted 30th Dec
How many mamas are going to be trying to lose weight come next week? I know that lately, there have been a ton of weight loss support threads started, but I wanted this one to be a little different.

This isn't just about losing weight, this is about GETTING HEALTHY. This is not about being on a diet, its about making a healthy lifestyle change. Weight loss is just the icing on the cake, figuratively speaking of course.

I don't like crash diets, hell I don't really care for diets in general. The only way to successful, consistent weight loss is less calories in and more calories out.

Who wants to get healthy in 2013?

There is no pictures, no signing of affidavits, no pinky swears, etc. This is the honor system - if you choose to lie, who cares? It only effects you. There are no prizes - the prize is getting healthy. If you want to show your progress in pictures, you can - it just isn't mandatory.

We will start with January. Just like alcoholics, we take one day at time. You falter, get back up. You CAN do this.

Be Realistic! According to most nutritionists, WebMd, Sparkpeople, and dieticians, on a healthy weight loss plan, you should expect to lose no more than 2 lbs/wk. Unrealistic goals lead to meltdowns. I also cannot be supportive of people starving themselves and I will speak up if I see it.

Join me in getting healthy in 2013!

I'll start us off!

Name: Jessica
Age: 27

Why you are getting healthy:
I am currently 19 weeks pregnant with my second child. I am trying to have as healthy of a pregnancy as possible. So far, I've only had a weight gain of 2 lbs and I am trying to keep the weight gain to a minimum as I am already at an unhealthy weight.

What are your biggest health obstacles:
Soda. I only drink diet but I know that its not something that I "need." I struggle with drinking enough water and I know it leads to bloating and lack of weight loss.

I'd love to... In May. Until then, no exercise at all (high risk!) and only moderate dieting to avoid gaining too much during pregnancy since I can't exercise!

I lost 30lbs in 2012 and have baby weight (only 2lbs at 18w) plus 20 to lose once she's born.

You could always join us for the healthy tips! I can't lose either until May and really don't exercise much but making good eating/drinking choices is good for both us and the babies we are having!

Why you are getting healthy: I want to be a better role model for my son, I'm not overweight but I don't think I'm healthy. I eat junk food all the time and I want to stop.
What are your biggest health obstacles: I have a pretty fast metabolism so I just eat junk food all the time, I might gain a pound or so but I'm always right around the 140-145 area. I want to be 120-130.

Why you are getting healthy: I was always the skinny, hot friend when I would go out and then I got pregnant and got in that "Oh, I'm eating for two!" mindset and really lost control of myself and now when I am out with people, I'm the fat friend. I AM pregnant now, but have made some serious strides in the difference in how I ate, but it's still a work in progress. I lost 40 pounds of my PP weight and then I got pregnant again, so right now it's maintaining a healthy pregnancy and then continuing my healthy lifestyle afterwards.
What are your biggest health obstacles: My husband. He refuses to change his eating and is constantly acting like I'm trying to make things hard on him. He complains about everything not having flavor even though he hasn't tried it. Instead of working out, he wants to sit on the couch and watch. For me it's very hard to workout with an audience, that's why I do it at home in the first place. Also, he is always going out and bringing home fast food and pizza and stuff. He thinks that just because he's skinny he's healthy...I would bet that he's not.

Random thing I started using when I realized how much I'd let myself go was myfitnesspal.com It tracks calories really well. I didn't realize how many calories I was taking in just in drinks alone!

Welcome, Candice!

I know how you feel about being a good role model. I feel like I am constantly explaining my bad habits to my daughter and its something I work on daily.

I would love to join the thread for more motivation to workout and all

My name is Melissa
I Just turned 30 on the 21st

Why I'm getting healthy -I'm currently already at a healthy weight but I want to tone more and maybe sometime this year be able to run a 5K all the way through

Biggest healthy obstacles- I don't like a lot of healthy foods except fruit and baked chicken LOL I go through spells of doing good with my calorie intake, then I go through spells of not eating so good(like this week). I need to drink more water than I do right now on work days I tend to drink 2 bottles which I know is less that the recommended amount.

Hi Kari!

I love MFP! I haven't used it regularly because of my pregnancy - it made me depressed to up my calories lol

As for your husband, I completely understand. I had to essentially find recipes that looked unhealthy but weren't in order to get my husband on my side! It worked though and now he will eat the "healthy" foods that I make and rarely even knows how healthy they are!

Ok, as of a couple of months ago ive been trying to lose weight, since having my LO is Feb I just keep putting it on. I was at 180 in the beginning of November, I started speed walking everyday and cut coca cola out of my diet (my diet is otherwise ok, but that was my weakness) and I have lost a bit of weight, but I dont know how much exactly because I havent weighed myself again (Im too scared too in case it is bad) BUT all my clothes fit better, I can feel that I am a little fitter and people have said I noticeably look like ive lost weight. Im not at my goal yet, I have a pair of jeans I could fit pre pregnancy, and as soon as I do I will be happy. I can fit them now but they are tighter than before, so heres to getting healthier and losing more weight in 2013!

Hi, Melissa!

I would LOVE to run a 5K one day. I can't wait to say I've accomplished that.

Eating healthy can be a huge challenge. Hopefully, we can share some recipes/ideas in here that will give you some options that you like!
