TTC and age..

posted 30th Dec
What are your thoughts on people 40+ ttc a child?

Do you look at a man having another child at 50 vs a women differently? Is one more socially acceptable or "right"

Do you think the pros of being an older parent, outweigh the cons?

Would you try for a child at 40+?

Do you think there should be an age limit on ART?

Nothing wrong with being 40 and TTC. As long as they know the risks then why not?..
I do find that TLC show 70 & Pregnant to be kind odd.... since they will likely be dead before their kid even hits puberty.

ETA: No I don't think I would TTC 40+... I'm 23 and I had a tubal last year, it would make things a bit difficult. lol

Of course there is a difference between a 50 year old man and 50 year old woman TTC. She is going to be the one carrying it so it makes the pregnancy much more risky. I personally wouldn't do it but if I hadn't been able to find someone until later in life I would look over my options and possibly ttc.

It's a personal choice. I wouldn"t want to but I wouldn't judge someone for it.

My parents were about 45 and 50 when they adopted me and everyone always called them my grandparents. Here I am at almost 26 and have a brother who will be 51.

I wouldn't personally. But I wouldn't think badly of someone who did..

I had a friend whose parents had her in their 40s, and her dad passed away before she graduated high school, and her mom passed away a couple of years after. They were both in their mid to late 60's when they passed away.

Which, I know not everyone passes away that young, but they were never really able to do a lot with her like my parents were with me. I want to spend as long as possible with my kiddos.

I don't see anything wrong with it.
They are probably well more established and able to provide than a 20 year old.

But I personally would NEVER do it. I am done after 30. I do not want to be pregnant past 29.. lol, just don't.

SO was 45 when LO was born.

He gets mistaken for his grandpa..and as my dad.

I think it is very taboo, because you look as an older person as working towards retiring and settling down on "life." With having a kid, it is pretty much starting over, in a way.

I mean, SO is going to be in his 60s once LO is moving out, so he gets a lot of smurf, especially from friends of his. I am saying "smurf" as in joking with him about it.

Im 39 and just gave birth 12.22. Pregnancy went well. .no complications. Only gained 22pounds.. fewer than any prior preg. Altho one was 35pounds w twins. I had a good delivery.. 3.5hrs from time of check in at hospital to delivery. no epidural. We are financially stable but i was at the late 20s when I had my first 3.

My husband and I do not look our ages and we are both very fit and do not expect to be limited physically such that we can't play with our son. He also said tonight that he still has names going thru his head for a kil girl. I expect that we will have another but I dont want another too soon. So I would expect that I would be 41_42. Not sure id go mych further past that though

I'm also 39 and will be 40 before I could possibly have a baby. Not my choice, I would love to have been able to have a baby a bit younger. We started TTC at 35. My embryos are from from a 28 year old egg donor though, so chromosomes are not an issue.

My only concern is the woman's health. It becomes more risky as you age. But I don't really think anything about people's choices.

I wouldn't try for a child not at 40 not now, lol. I'm ok with one.

What are the 'pros' and 'cons' of being an older parent?

Pros - More likely to be financially stable, place a higher value on education, and have a stable marriage
Cons - Less likely to enjoy grandchildren, much more difficult pregnancies (in my case anyway), high risk pregnancy

The cons I can see them but I can also see people with those same pros before their 40s.

That's why I prefaced it with "more likely."
