Is it too soon?

My husband and I are disagreeing on whether or not to let our LO who just turned one play with a real, but no service active cell phone. She always trys to grab for mine, and since I dio not let her, she gets upset. We have an old phone from another service that will still turn on, charges fine, and lights up. If she tried to call some one, it even says 'this service is not available'. That's why I think she would enjoy it. She will not play with toy phones, and we had already agreed to keep it for her to play with. When I went to get it he said he wanted to wait til later, cause she's too young, not til about 3-4 years. I asked him why, all he says is she is too young, end of story. So what do yall think?

Only thing I see wrong is that she can still dial 911 because it works... I'd take the battery out

We let our oldest DS play with our deactivated cell phones but we took the batteries out of them first.

Wow, you can still call 911! I did not know this, of course I've never tried. I can lock it though.

Maybe I'll let her use it w/out the battery until she is a lil older, and check out how easy/hard it is to do that 911 thang!

Yeah all phones have it even if they are no longer in service.

I was told in school, cops came in and wanted to talk to us. They said a lot of their calls are from little children messing with phones that parents think are "deactivated" or kids butt dialing at school and after it happens so many times it can become a federal offense.

I let my 10.5 month old play on my cell all the time, it keeps her busy. lol but its also why my phone acts up know.

We dont have the option to dial 911 here on deactivated cell phones here, we have tried before. You cant from a home phone either if you dont have a number hooked up to it.

I have an almost 5 year old and an 18month old. My oldest has been playing with my old phones since before she was 1. I really dont see that there is abig deal with it aside from them being able to dial 911. Which my LO has done before accidentally. They really enjoy playing these old phones, but you do have to be careful because once my lo took my real phone and put it with her purses and other old phones and I couldnt find it for months and ended up having to buy a whole new phone because we couldnt find where she put it. (she was about 3 at the time). So you dont want them to mistake your current phone for an old play phone. If you look online they do have play phones for kids that are getting more and more realistic, so it might just be best to get her something like that to play with. like they have mini touch screen play phones and princess blackberrys and whatnot.
