When did your...

When did your kid(s) stop putting things in thier mouth? DD is 2.5 and STILL puts everything in her mouth. I've done everything I know to do including time outs and she just does not get the concept. I don't care what it is either. Coins, crayons, any and everything she gets a hold of. Shouldn't she be growing out of this? Or is that wishful thinking? Lol.

Another question that's sort of on the same topic. When did your kid start eating with utensils? She knows how and does really well. She just refuses to. She'd rather eat with her hands and smear her food all over herself. Normal for a 2 year old? TIA!

My DD will be 2 on Friday and is the same way. I never had these issues with my son.

My kids both ate with utensils very early in life (from what it seems) They were eating fairly well with them around a year.

As for putting things in their mouth, my daughter was not one to do it very much. My son, however, is 2 and he still explores with his mouth a lot. I just chalk it up to being normal, try to correct it and move on.

DD is ridiculous about it. A little while ago I took a button out of her mouth. She chewed it off her shirt!   I swear she's set on giving me a heart attack.

I'm pretty orally fixated myself, I wonder if DD is too. But still, I'm really worried she's going to put something in her mouth and I'm not going to realize it quick enough and she'll end up choking on it. Anything you do with your DS that seems to work? I've tried explaining to her on her level that we only put certain things like food, medicine, toothbrushes, etc in our mouths. She doesn't seem to get it.

Honestly, no. I haven't really thought too much about it. I just figured that some kids were more oral than others, in the way they explore their surroundings. Maybe it should concern me more than it does, but I'm a pretty laid back mom, so maybe that is why?

You know I'm 26 and still put things in my mouth that don't belong there. (Cords to my headphones, buttons, etc.) I like the texture and pressure. For me its a coping mechanism along with biting my nails....

I do too. But I know not to swallow things, DD doesn't. For example, she chows down on crayons. Playdoh was a huge disaster too. Lol.

My 4 and 7 year olds still randomly put things in their mouth. Given, its not as often as my 17 month old does. But still. Lol. My 3 year old has moved on to sticking things up his nose... :/. We had to make a trip to the dr to get a bead from a Christmas ornament out of his nose. He hasn't done it as moch since though! ;)

As far as using utensils, my kids usually started doing better with them by 2ish. My 17 month old wants nothing to do with them except beat the high chair with them. Lol

Your daughter is seeking oral input, the general consensus is 12 months to stop putting things in their mouth (unless whilst teething) and past then it starts to become a concern. My 3 1/2 year and and my 27mo both still put things in their mouth (among other things) and are both being assessed for sensory processing disorder and autism. If your daughter has any other behaviors that concern you I'd speak to your gp or see a child health development centre

Oh peanut has never Chewed on her clothes. But she puts button she finds, erasers, Legos, everything else it seems. Nothing that tastes bad or has a strange texture like playdoh, though.
