I need help

posted 29th Dec
I'm about to lose my mind. I need to know if anyone has gone through this. All my son does from the second he wakes up to when he goes to bed is destroy my house or cry. He has ripped down all the blinds for the sliding glass door, ripped up the blinds in his room, shakes the computer desk slamming it into the wall putting holes in the wall and breaking glass, he climbs anything and everything so now he can't have a coffee table but he also climbs up the entertainment center to the tv and to get himself higher up to break more things on the computer desk, he shakes the ferrets cage so I have to have it locked up in the kitchen which without fail I cannot go into the kitchen and close the gate behind me to make some food or get a drink without a 30 min long melt down. Which means I cannot do dishes when he's awake. I basically can't get ANYTHING done when he's awake. I try to take a shower with him he climbs out and climbs onto the too of the toilet trying to pull down the towel rack. I'm about a second away from losing my damn mind. For Christmas he got more toys than you can imagine and coloring books and activities for us to do but if I try to sit him down to play with him and keep him occupied he just cries or runs away back to destroying things. I've been persistently telling him NO for 2 months now and nothing has changed. I just don't know what to do anymore and it's to the point I dread being home with him because its just so miserable and my husband works so much he's hardly ever home ):

How old is your son? My oldest did very similar things when he was younger (it started to get bad when he was around 1 1/2) To this day, looking back on it, I don't know how I managed to deal with him....we had talked to our family dr about him when he was in preschool because he was wonderful and well behaved there, but HORRIBLE when he was home or if we took him anwhere, and our dr told us it sounded like behavioral and parenting issues.....well come to find out when he was in kindergarten we took him to a specialist for a few months and found out he has ADHD with severe hyperactivity....We put him on meds (really didn't want to..but something had to be done in fear of him hurting his little brother and sister) and I swear he is a totally different child now, he is not destructive anymore and is as sweet as can be, but if we forget to give him his meds one day...oh boy!! .....and the specialist told us all of his behavioral issues when he was younger was due to the ADHD...It's very hard to deal with a child like this when you don't know whats going on...my advice to you would be to take him to a specialist and see whats going on, it could be ADHD or it could be something else, but it's best to figure it out now...good luck!!

He's 15 months. And honestly that's exactly what I think it is! He just cannot sit still and still sleeps very badly at night. I was hoping he would grow out of it but it sounds like he might not.. Thank you I wasn't sure how early they could diagnose if he had ADHD but ill ask his pedi about it next time he goes in. Is your son happier now on the meds? My son constantly acts bored and miserable I would put him on meds in a second if it would make him happier and more content

Oh also did he give you problems sitting still and eating? His iron is low because I just can't get him to sit down and eat a full meal he only wants to eat what he can carry around and snack on

Yes he is much happier now!! And like you said with your son, he was always so bored...nothing could keep his attention!! And he does eat a lot better now, because before he was here there and everywhere....after we put him on meds though he had a decrease in his appetite due to the meds, but I got him the kids supplement shakes to make sure he was getting all the nutrition he needed, but after a few weeks on the meds he started to get his appetite back. He is seriously a totally different child now...I used to get compliments from people before they knew he was diagnosed and medicated about what a turn around he did...he actually turned into a very nice kid with manners and people could actually hold a conversation with him...they were all shocked to see how changed he was (i was seriously embarrassed to take him ANYWHERE because of the way he acted and would not listen to us at all...especially in a store) and he is def not violent anymore....he used to be soooo violent which scared the crap out of me...this kid would not think twice about punching me in the face or hitting his brother and sister....I mean they still get into their little spats, but nothing like before...I can honestly say I was scared for him, and the safety of my other children....but since he has been on meds, its gone. As he is getting older now, he is learning to deal with some of it but the meds have helped very much.
