5 year old with body image issues

posted 29th Dec
I think my daughter is getting one.. i constantly will catch her sucking in at a mirror.. she will tell people "i better not get fat like honey boo boo" i see her making comments about heavy set people. she was sick and didnt eat for 4ish days.. and during that time she last around 2 lbs and i was telling my mom about it and she overheard me and was happy about it her words were "im getting super skinny now" she eats small meals but she eats like 3-4 times a day ive struggled in the past with my weight and i feel like im too blame..

shes not under weight at all.. shes 45 pounds and 46-47 inches

is this normal at 5?

Thats not normal. Id be calling my pedi to see how to respond to her. At 5 she should be playing dolls and learning her alphabet. Not worrying about being fat.

Good luck mama.

O.O why does she know who honey boo boo is?

Is any one she is around or who lives in the house constantly dieting or trying to lose weight?

Not normal. My 5 year doesn't care about weight at all, and I know no children that young who do. My daughter's classmates don't even tease her for being overweight! It's just not something most 5 year olds think about.

Not normal at all. I would look at getting her in to speak with someone and see whats going on with her. I'm sorry!

she does play with dolls and do her alphabet shes very smart .. no one here is dieting.. her whole life isnt occupied around how she looks.. its she makes these little comments that concern me

i talked to her pedi about it and she said that some girls are more concerned with thier looks even more with tv and dolls being out that are "skinny" and just reassure her that she isnt big and reassure her she looks fine and hopefully she grows out of it

most of my friends who has kids her age has boys so i can really talk to them about it..

Could be the tv/media you are exposing her too. We watch nothing other than young childrens cartoons/disney movies. We only watch our shows (parenthood, white collar) after they are in bed. Kids pay a lot more attention than we give them credit for.

My friends 7 yr old is like this, but she was teased at school a bit for being big, which she is not at all, as a baby yes. She is very tall and yes she is like 65lbs but all tight muscle.

They are bringing her to see someone, cause it started when she was around 5. This kid never eats either, you offer her something and she nibbles on it, and its been that way since her toddler years, never really ate much.

But she is constantly saying she is fat, and then ugly and all this other stuff. Now bothher parents are big, but they dont make comments about themselves in that way. so.

I would just keep an eye on her and see what happens. Talk to her on the subject.

she was teased by a bully in her class and we took it to the teacher and she said it stopped... she eats normal.. small meals but shes never been a big eater even as a baby the pedi said shes average .. most shows we watch are nick jr and disney jr.. i try to watch my shows if shes sleeping or i put it on the kindle while shes watching hers but she doesnt even watch alot of tv..

i know shes under alot of stress right now with moving and a baby on the way and the fact im with someone.. her dad has never been in her life.. when school starts back up ill see if i can talk to the school nurse and she what she wants me to do or take her to a different pedi to see what they say..

i just dont want her to go through the same issues i did growing up (my mom is a big lady and so is my sister so my mom used to make sure i knew that being big was bad and no one would like me.. caused alot of body image issues) but i know i try my hardest to make sure she doesnt feel the way i did growing up

right now shes actually having a picnic in the living room with her dolls .. the cvomments arent all the time just getting more frequent

not really normal. i would just tell her beauty comes in every size. skinny isn't the only type of beauty. and i'd tell her she is beautiful the way she is. no more of this "i'm skinny." talk.

Some boys do go through this. I bought my 5 year old boy a nice Columbia jacket for this winter and the first time he put it on he said, "But Mom this coat makes me look fat!" He has never been picked on and the TV never leaves the Disney/Nick channel when it's on unless the kids are sleeping. I just keep telling him he is perfect just the way he is, 45 inches tall 46 pounds but he's solid and in no way fat. Of course he cried to Grandma about the coat making him look fat and guess who got another brand new one... Hopefully it's just a stage and she will grow out of it.
