Breastfeeding

posted 29th Dec
DD is 2 weeks and 3 days and is EBF. My question is that i have read and heard from a lot of places that you should offer both breasts when breastfeeding if they pull off the first one... but DD just falls asleep after feeding off the first breast? I have offered her the second one and she just doesnt take it beause she is asleep and i have tried waking her up to feed some more and she just falls back to sleep without feedingmore because she is too tired. I switch to the other breast for the next feed so my supply stays stable.

Am i doing this right or should i be stopping her mid-way through the first breast to switch to the second? but then she will only get the foremilk and not the hind milk?

Ds ended up being a one boob at a time baby. If she is content, I'd say she's probably just full. If she seems hungrier, offer her more.

Thanks   also, she is fed on demand, but i will feed her and sometimes it can be 4 houts before she feeds again or it could be only half an hour... is this normal?

If she seems content and is making enough wet diapers then its fine, just switch breasts at each feeding. There are ways to try and keep her up though. Blow in her face, play with her feet, undress her down to her diaper, wipe the bottom of her feet with a cold washcloth. It will help keep her up for feedings. But again if she seems content and making enough wet diapers its ok just switch breasts at every feeding.

Yep. Lol. It's weird at first. But eventually it will feel more normal and a little more predictable. Lol.

Thank you   yeah she seems content... what's more content than a flat out baby?

Just keep on with what you're doing, honey. My DD is 2 weeks and EBF as well, and usually she only takes on breast at a feeding. I'll offer the other one, but after she's burped she usually just falls asleep. She sometimes decides she wants the other side in like, 20 minutes, but most of the time it's a few more hours before she wants the other one. If it starts becoming painful for me, I just pump the breast she didn't feed from until the pain is gone, not until it's "empty."

And this.   if you pump too much while your supply is still establishing, you might begin to make too much milk. They recommend waiting to pump a lot until around 6 weeks. But I totally pumped or hand expressed until I was comfortable if it became painful.

Okay thank you   she is a very happy baby and her weight gain has been good so far so i'll just stick at it! I love breastfeeding, i'd hate to have to feed her formula... it just feels like bthe breastmilk is doing her so much good

Exactly. And just think, if she was still hungry she would keep eating.

i have expressed occasionally, that is when she has gone 4.5+ hours without feeding and my boobs just can't take any more haha!

Well then I'd say what you're doing is just fine.

DD is the same way...she's 2 weeks 1 day and I can never get her to do both sides. She'll do one and then fall asleep, and then sometimes she's ready to nurse again half an hour later. I just feed her on demand until she's done and alternate breasts every time. My supply is great and DD is gaining plenty of weight (she gained 14 oz in a week) so I think it's fine. Every baby is different!
