Signing up for WIC, have some questions!

posted 29th Dec
Ok, so after some prodding by SO's family, I've decided to sign up for WIC. I need to stop being stubborn and swallow my pride, because we do need the help. Anyway, my question is mainly for nursing moms. I read on the website that they provide nutritional support for nursing moms, and saw a list of the smurf I'd get per month. I guess what I'm asking is for personal experiences with WIC, as a nursing mother. I was on WIC when I was pregnant with my first DD, and we kept it til she was about 3 months old (they REFUSED to dispense the formula she NEEDED, so we said smurf it).

Does it work the same as it did 5 years ago? I remember having to go to the WIC office, I got a check up and so did my daughter, and then we got some checks. Any input you ladies could offer me would be great. I'm really adverse this whole thing, but we really are hurting financially, and I need to make sure that I'm getting what I need, for DD.

I don't know how the check ups would go for you but when we had WIC they wanted to see DD for check ups every 6 months

As a full breastfeeding mother, I get extra milk, cheese, and tuna or salmon. I also got a breastpump that I get to keep. Now that DD is 6 months old, she gets twice as much baby food as a FF baby.

Quoting KiKi Dee:" Basically the same way. You don't get a check up every month, it is every so many months. Mine was 6 ... [snip!] ... need different formula the dr has to write a prescription for it so the WIC office will give it to you. My Lo was on Alimentum."

Well I'm not worried about formula for right now, since I'm exclusively nursing.

With my oldest though, we HAD a dr's note saying what kind of formula she needed, and they wouldn't honor it. It was crap.

I used to work for WIC, BFing mothers got eggs, juice, cereal, milk, PB, beans, tuna, cheese and bread, $10 for fresh fruits and veggies. Once your LO starts solids you will still get all that plus the baby cereal and food.

Well first of all you should never feel shamed for getting wic. wic has higher income levels and they offer a lot of support for moms. I've gotten so many resources from wic that I would have never found on my own.

You get whatever food they cover in your state. Typically something like milk eggs cheese bread and fruits/veggies juice PB. When I was Bfing I got tuna and carrots but that was before they did fresh fruits and veggies so idk what they get now. My advice is USE ALL YOUR STUFF. I found out they get finding based on percentages used. So if they aren't getting good usage they can lose some funding. If we get too much stored up we give it to family (like extra cereal or bread that might go bad otherise).

You'll get it for a yr as long as your nursing. If u want formula then they stop everything and five u formula instead. Then at 6 mos you get more stuff depending on state. Here we get baby cereal and food and infant juice. But it goes by state cause I didn't get that in WA. Then at one yr old the baby gets their own package and you don't anymore.

From my wic we go every 6 mos for a recert and every 3 mos for a card reload (we use little debit card things instead of checks). If you're Bfing here u get a LC and can go to a nutritionist for yourself and baby. You can do weight hacks whenever u want.

Wic is great if you truly need it but I am curious about people having kid after kid if they need the help of WIC-makes no sense.

Wic has high income levels. It doesn't mean u can't afford kids because you're on wic. I don't qualify for ANY assistance except wic. It's totally diff than needing welfare assistance.

A bit judgmental, I think.

You don't know anyone's situation, therefor you can speak for nothing.

Dont you know if you ever need assistance u should just give your kids away

Obviously they have the income levels they do for a reason. If you qualify you qualify, plain and simple. Who is to say who qualifies or not. Just because I'm getting by doesn't mean it doesn't help. Without it we'd figure it out but it's nice to have one less Thing to worry about.
