Motrin and tylenol

posted 28th Dec
My son is 2 1/2 and is prone to febrile seizures and caught this death cold that has been going around. I am worried because he has a fever and I just gave him some baby tylenol. How long should I wait before giving him some motrin to?

Alternate every 4 hours.

That's for a child with no other health concerns. I don't know how seizures would play into that though.

any time... but if you give one....then 3 hours later the other they should overlap enough to keep the fever down without waiting for the fever to spike again.

how high the fever goes isn't as worrisome as how fast it spikes.. so keeping it down is your best bet if he's prone to siezures.

(tylenol can be given every 4 hours, and motrin every 6, so either one could be given a little early if needed, but usually every 3 hours works well)

Every 4 to 6 hours.

DH said (And I quote). "Seizures have nothing to do with it. All infants are prone to Febrile Seizures partly because of their immune system, and partly because their body doesn't know how to regulate temperature."

I realize that but my father has epilepsy. It runs in my family and i was told by doctors that is seizure threshold is different then a normal baby because of this. There for I have to be a bit more careful. Some children who had febrile seizures end up having epilepsy. Its not a huge number but it's enough for me to be concerned.

each can be given every 4-6 hours... that gives a temp time to spike again. Rotating them.. you can give them closer together to keep the temp from spiking.

Understandable. I also over looked where you had said your LO is 2 and 1/2. I apologize for that.

I read what you responded, and DH said every 4-6 hours should be just fine.

At the ER the DO told us you can give them at the same time starting out. but then every 4 hys with Tylenol and every 6 with ibuprofen.

I feel like ibuprofen works better for bringing down fevers. My pedi said NOT to alternate now because it has been shown to cause liver damage. SO Who knows?!

Right, but part of altering the medication is because your body metabolizes them differently. Even though they are different types of drugs, they share some of the same properties, and you still have to allow the body to metabolize them before adding more.

motrin isn't filtered through the liver?? only tylenol is. Motrin is filtered through the kidneys... that's why it's ok to alternate them

I don't disagree with alternating them. Motrin and Tylenol also have common properties that should be metabolized before adding another dose. Which is why I suggested every 4 - 6 hours.

SO ibuprofen isn't metabolized? Everything in your body ends up getting filtered through your kidneys.

Give your child the correct dose of acetaminophen every four hours, or as directed by your pediatrician. Do not double up on this medication if you miss a dose. Administering too much acetaminophen to your child can cause liver failure and death.
Step 4

Wait two hours and then administer the correct dose of ibuprofen to your child. The recommended dosing schedule for ibuprofen is every six to eight hours. This means some doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen may be closer together than other doses. Ask your pediatrician for special instructions on how to handle this.

I was also told to alternate them last time my son had a seizure. Even adults can take them together as well. They are two different substances and are not dangerous I just wasn't sure as to what is reccomended. :[
