I earn $42,000 a year and SO earns $38,000 a year. I'm currently 29 and have recently come out of bankruptcy, I have no credit cards, store cards, or loans (except mortgage and car) at my current level of savings I will be
39 before I have a years salary in savings (and that's my current salary).

Not really how it works in Australia.
It's to encourage mothers back into the workforce.

Im surprised at everyone saying "Have one years income saved" -- IF YOU DO HAVE THAT MUCH IN SAVINGS, How long did it take you to save up?! My SO (without me working) made $70,000 this year. We are in debt, live paycheck to paycheck 1/2 the time, "live above our means"..... even if all our debt was gone except our Mortage, i think it'd take about 8-9 years to save up that much and NOT touch it!

I don't even have 1 pay saved yet lol, I had about 3 months worth but something came up. As always! And it took 2 months of doing a smurf ton of overtime to save 3 months worth of 'regular' pay.

I agree. A stable family is more important than how much $ u have. I've seen many people live on peanuts and have wonderful happy children and lives.

Yeah I would question how long it would take to saw that up.
Was it all just income from your weekly cheque, or was part of it from a nest egg or tax returns???

Same here!! It took me almost 6 months (when we only had ONE kid, 4 yrs ago) to save up $3,500 to move (for security deposits, utilities, ect) NOW- ha... i couldnt even guess how long it'd take to save that much. In about 18 months that'll all change for us, but until then....

Well in my opinion having "just enough" isn't enough. You should have extra saved before you TTC.

I have so much I want to do around my house before I start saving in earnest. I want to finish the painting, put down wood floors, buy a new fridge, and get the landscaping completely finished.

My aunt has always had the attitude that you should have at least a years wage saved up. She's MULTI millionaire, who owned a oil and gas mining company. She never had any children because she was never able to keep an entire yearly wage in the bank. She's only now just sold her business and considers herself financially stable ... unfortunately she's also 63.
