not your average vbac question.

posted 28th Dec
I was chatting with my aunt who had c sections with all her children this christmas. She told me the reason she had a c sec the first time was the same as mine: water broke by itself, but no contractions or anything. She expired the time allotted for having the baby because she was not dilated enough. She told me that her OB said a good candidate for VBAC would be someone who was fully dilated and going thru labor but something happened like distress and had to do it, not someone who never dilated the first time like my aunt.

Waaa I'm scared now! And disappointed! Any vbac'ers out there? Did you fully dilate the first time or not?

I have never heard that :S hmmm. I don't see why that would matter. Sometimes havin children back to back or having an emerncy csection where you had to get a vertical cut or having multiple c sections can change the vbac option. But I've never heard that one   I hope u can do one sweety. Just find a dr who will do it.

It's true, but just because you didn't dilate the first time doesn't mean you are still not a good candidate for a vbac.
I only got to 1 cm with my son after two failed induction, my water breaking and over 24 hours of labor. I went 42 weeks with my daughter(one week over what my OB and midwife wanted me too) and I still had no dilation, effacement, and a hard/high cervix. So I had a repeat c-section. I think my case is extremely rare though.

My doctor said the same thing, one of the reasons I am not a good candidate is because after three days of various induction methods, I hadn't made any progress.

I have heard this, I did fully dilate with K but had an emergency csection due to fetal distress. That is the best case scenario for someone wanting to vbac but you can be a good canadite either way.

My dr said that he will give anyone a trial of labor as long as there wasnt some medical reason with the placenta/uterus for the csection to begin with.
I didnt fully dilate on my own with K, it was pitocin induced. I did fully dilate with M for my VBAC with no medical intervention besides breaking my water at 6cm.

I didn't dilate on my first pregnancy at all , had a planned c-section at 36 weeks due to my health. Second c-section I don't believe I dilated fully, was one in the plans but it kinda became an emergency at 38 weeks. My third birth was a VBA2C and I dilated fully with nothing special, it all happened pretty fast. I was never told that dilation mattered though. The only suggest you wait 18 months or so to have a baby after a c-section with a VBAC , the more time the better, and as long as you have a horizontal cut and not a vertical one (both inside and out) you should be able to have a VBAC unless you have complications that make it impossible.
