Washing a smoker's clothing separately. Discuss and debate.

posted 28th Dec
So here is my dilemma. I am a NON-smoker, but my husband is a smoker and shows no signs of quitting though I've always been supportive of him trying to quit without being judgmental. But our issue comes in with our laundry. I wash his laundry separately. It smells completely of stale smoke to me. I don't even like to hug him if he's still in his work clothes because of the smell. But lately he's been trying to help with laundry and he just stuffs the machine with whatever is in the laundry room til the thing is full. Even if I've already have it 'separated' into his, mine, our daughter(almost 4yrs old), towels, whites, dedicates. And I've asked him several times to not wash his clothing with Anything else since I don't want the smell or any lingering chemicals to transfer into any of the other laundry. I even wash his clothes with extra fabric softner to help kill the smoke smell. So if faced with this issue what would you ladies do? I'm about a stone throw away from hiding all the other dirty laundry and washing it when he's not about just so he won't wash his clothes with anything else....but he wash whichever towel he's been using with them, so again just aggravating. And I'm just going to stop rambling here and listen to what you would do. If you have problems with this, or about separating or not separating clothes. Am I over-reacting about this? So Go. And thanks in advance ladies. Am

I think you are over reacting. All the chemical and stink from smoke is already in your furniture, the house, touched your kid. So I think you are being a bit cray cray, if he wants to help with laundry, let him.

I'd be seriously irritated if he just shoved everything in, smoker or not.

I'd thank him for the help and tell him I'm very appreciative, but I got this smurf. He can go clean the kitchen cause I hate doing that

He smokes quite a bit. a pack-pack and a half per day. If he's stressed he'll smoke more. His work clothes never come fully free of the smell. He doesn't smoke in the house or my car. Only in his car and outside.

are the "chemicals" on his clothes you're talking about the ones in cigarettes or are they other chemicals from his job? i'm confused on that. if my bf has been doing really dirty or oily stuff, he will leave those clothes separate and wash them himself.

but aside from that.... i think washing them is enough. they should get clean enough from that. i've never had a problem with the other clothes smelling like smoke or anything after being washed with his. but... the only clothes i plan on washing separately are the baby's clothes.

if you feel this strongly, tell him you don't need help, but.... be prepared for him to be offended and possibly never help with the laundry again....

Just tell him that you don't want his nasty smelly laundry touching yours LOL That's what I would do

I am a laundry freak and I cannot stand it when SO tries to help, he is not a smoker but I still seperate things that need to be seperated, colors, whites, delicates, towels etc, and he just shoves everything in. I can see why other people would think its an overreaction but I dont think it is, just because im fussy about washing too. I would rather he didnt help with the washing, and now he doesnt and thats the way I like it. Just explain that you like the washing done a certain way, and while you appreciate his help you would rather do it. I told my SO I liked doing it, so he lets me.

I think you are overreacting, but I understand that people have certain ways they like things done.

My dh was a heavy smoker (outside and in his car only) until a few weeks ago and I always washed his stuff with everyone elses. I never had a problem with the smoke smell lingering on either his clothes or transferring to ours after the clothing was washed and dried. Maybe you could try a new detergent and/or dryer sheet if you have that problem?

ETA: df used to help with the laundry and just shoved towels and whites and colors together, which drove me nuts. I banned him from touching any laundry other than his own if he wants to help, lol.
