CIO questions

posted 28th Dec
What do you do when you are still in the initial phase of CIO and the baby falls asleep nursing?
If you lie them down, you've essentially done exactly what you were doing prior to starting CIO. But, it seems so mean to wake a baby up in order to Mae them cry.

I may have mre questions, this was just the first one that I came across.

how old is your baby? I don't see a problem with nursing and them falling asleep. Sometimes its a big comforting stage. You are still going to be feeding your baby and likely there after the baby will be going to sleep anyways..or if your baby is older and its not quite bed time then yea you would probably need to wake them up..

CIO isn't meant to make them cry. The idea is if they refuse to go to bed on their own, you lay them down and let them fall asleep on their own, even if it means crying for a few minutes. So if you're wanting baby to be in bed at say 8pm every night, then even if he's awake at 8pm, you take him in his room and put him to bed. Eventually he'll start falling asleep within 5-10 minutes of when you put him down for the night.

Is your little guy on solids yet? I just realized I know nothing of your parenting preferences and I know some delay solids until a year.

What happens is; at 6:30 he nurses and 99% of the time he falls straight asleep but as soon as I la him down he wakes up,or if I'm lucky, he stays asleep for 30 mins but then he's back up wanting to nurse. We do this dance all night long.

He's 10 mths.

I guess what I'm wondering is should I just start the CIO stuff when I lay him down assuming he wakes right up?

I know CIO isn't making them cry but by not picking him up and nursing him he will def be crying.

Yeah, he is. He eats 3 meals and 2-3 snacks a day.

Yes. I would start it from the first time he wakes up. So if you lay him down and he immediately wakes up, leave him for the 3 minutes, then 5, then 10, etc. Or if he wakes up 30 minutes later, same thing. Just be consistent.

I didnt nurse for that long, so I am ot sure if it is any different..

..but I always make sure LO is awake when I put him in his crib. If you don't, you can't really blame them for crying because they fell asleep in your warm, nice, mama arms and wake up in a totally different place.

Have you ever woke up in a place you didnt fall asleep at? It's like that for them. lol

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm thinking. It just seems backwards to wake to sleeping baby up so that he can then cry to sleep.

Maybe I'm over thinking this.

Maybe start his last nurse earlier and then have the rest of his routine as diaper change, lotio, PJs, then book? Something like that?

I've thought about that but he won't do a really good, full feed unless he's trying to fall asleep. He gets so distracted. Then I'm all worried that he is still hungry, so idk if I'd back out of the CIO halfway through bc I'd start thinking that he's crying from hunger.

Yeah, I'm over thinking this.

You don't "have" to do it... If your instincts are telling you not to the don't...I didn't and my son sleeps on his own now for the most part and he is 2 1/2... my other friends never did either and all of their children are now 100% independant. This phase does not last forever.

^ I highly suggest that article. It is 100% legitimate source as well.

"With neuroscience, we can confirm what our ancestors took for granted---that letting babies get distressed is a practice that can damage children and their relational capacities in many ways for the long term. We know now that leaving babies to cry is a good way to make a less intelligent, less healthy but more anxious, uncooperative and alienated person who can pass the same or worse traits on to the next generation. I highly suggest looking up gentle parenting methods of sleep training. They are out there. Perhaps some other method would work better for you and feel right? :]
