I just don't get it.

I feel bad for my grandfather. My grandfather is not my biological grandfather. He's my mothers stepfather. He raised my mother and her siblings, me and my siblings, and is now a very, very significant part of my sons life. He's our grandfather in every sense of the word but blood. My moms real father abused my grandmother something terrible for years, in front of my mom and her siblings. He wanted nothing to do with the kids either. My grandmother finally had enough and shot him, the bullet grazed the side of his face, didnt kill him. He has tried twice in the almost 23 years I've been alive to contact anyone (including my mother). My uncle allowed him back into his life the last few years but he didnt really try to connect with anyone else. I've met him once, maybe twice. My sister and mother have decided to "reconnect" with him, apparently during my sister pregnancy. They all went to see him and take the newbz to meet him today. Even my brother went and took his baby. I didn't go, I cant. Patton and I have a grandfather and I can only imagine how hurt he is by this. It makes me want to cry.  . They're referring to this, literal, stranger as "father" and "grandfather". I'm sure he's only trying to come around because he's about to die... And I'm sure they're only doing it because they think they'll get money out of it... But still... I just don't get it

Your grandma rocks  Just do what you are doing. Don't reconnect if you don't want to. I don't think I would if I never had been around him.

Hahah. I don't blame her, I probably would've shot him too. She's a little woman, only 5'3, and back then she was MAYBE 100lbs tops. By pics if guess her at more like 85lbs.

Op, if you think money is the reason they're getting in touch, then maybe your family feels like the grandpa owes you guys something ?

It makes me think of my brother. He disowned all of us when I was like 12. He got back in touch when my great grandma was on her death bed. (8 years later) I thought it was mainly because he figured she had a stash of money hidden.   What he failed to realize was that out of all of her great grandchildren, I was the favorite

This! If I was in your position, I wouldn't reconnect with him. He sounds like an awful person & like you said...you have a grandfather.

It makes me sad. I guess I see it differently because I was in an abusive relationship so I know how she feels and I know that if J were still alive and 40 something years from now Patton wanted to do this with his kids after J being MIA for years... It'd crush me. So I can only imagine how they feel.

I probably couldn't either.

I dunno. My moms a very odd duckling. Who knows her reasoning for it. In all honesty my moms probably doing it to purposely hurt my grandmother.   that's how she is

I asked my nana if she talked to my grandfather (he's at work) and I he knew what they were doing. She said yes, and he's not happy. I just wanna cry.

Your grandma rocks!! I feel you though my grandpa is not blood but he is my grandpa. My mom met her sperm donor when she was 32 I never liked him (he was a mean drunk and bum). They tried to get me to visit him and bring LO to see him and I refused. I don't feel bad and apparently no one else did either since my mom paid for him to be cremated and just left him there and went back home.

What a terrible thing to do. Especially since your grandmother protected all of you guys from the abuse, and even put a stop to it.
