Umbillical cord question (please read)

posted 28th Dec
My Baby boy is 8 days old today, and I noticed today when I took him to his WIC appointment after I undressed him for them to measure and weigh him that his umbillical cord looked kind of bloody underneath it and gooey like. I asked the lady at WIC if it was normal and she just told me to call the pediatrician and ask so I called the hospital and asked to speak with a pediatriction since his pediatrician is out of town and they just told me to keep cleaning it in alcohol and if it keeps doing it to bring him in but is this normal for his umbillical cord to be like that I mean it's not really oozing or anything but it did get on his onsie a little bit but I cleaned around it in alcohol after I got home and it doesn't seem to be that bad has anyone else ever had your Lo's umbillical cord do this? could it be that its getting ready to come off cause it looks kind of loose.

That happened with both my boys when it was getting ready to come off. Just keep cleaning the area around it and it will come off when it is ready to.

I would just keep cleaning it and it will eventually dry up and fall off. My DS' fell off a lil too early bc it got tugged on by his sleeper and my SIL changed his diaper once and accidentally yanked on it.

my son's was nasty like that also right before it fell off. I actually made a post with a pic of how his belly button looked after wards to make sure it looked normal. Just keep an eye out for it to be missing soon

Are you dressing him in onesies and is it getting wet? Sometimes it does that if its to moist try to let him go with out a shirt after you clean it so it can dry up and harden.

Ok thanks glad to hear it's not just his doing it I was just worried something may be wrong with it like infection or something I clean it everytime I diaper him so I don't see how it could have gotten infected, but that's what I was thinking that maybe it's just getting ready to come off

You need to pull the cord out, swab it down and dry it after with a clean cotton ball or a-tip. But it doesn't sound bad.

Yeah his diaper has rubbed it some I have been trying to fold his diaper down some so it won't rub it you can tell it's getting loose though

Its normal, you dont need to do anything to it. And most doctors will now tell you not to use alcohol, just leave it alone and it will heal.

Yeah I let him wear onsies underneath his sleepers I might have to try to let it dry out though

That's what I've been doing you can tell when I wipe it that it's getting loose I'd say it will be coming off soon

Glad it's normal I was freaking out about it! Lol I'm just a worry wart and this is my first baby so I really don't know what's supposed to happen, my dr told me to use alcohol on it though to keep it satitised and to help it dry up pretty quick hopefully it will heal up soon though

I was worried also. I kept asking people if it looked normal. But I was changing him and I noticed it was gone it was lost in his sleeper lol. If it isn't bothering your LO and there isn't much left holding it on i'd think about just pulling it off. And his belly button will actually be gross looking for a few days.

It happen with my son we put him in onesies and if he peed outside his diaper it would soak on his shirt and make is stump all funky. so we just started putting him in a regular shirt while we were at home or just let him go shirtless in a blanket if the house was warm.
