Also a heads up from a banker. I always tell my clients that if the account is joint, the money belongs to whoever makes it to the Bank first. I've seen many situations where couples separate and one party gets upset because the other cleaned out the account. If your name is on it, you have all of the rights that he does...even closing the account without him present.

I thought common law was similar to being married... no? Or is that just in Canada?
Ever since I moved in with SO, got on his benefits and we started claiming our taxes together, my parents tried explaining to me it's just like being married... Never really paid attention to that though.

I'll be a SAHM as well when LO gets here, but will be working 10 hours or so on the weekends at a minimum wage job just for some extra cash

Some states in the US don't have common law anymore, but the states that do generally require you to be living together for 10 years or something before you're considered common law.

Wow that's crazy. SO and I lived together approx. 2 years and when I applied for a student loan I had to put I was in a common law relationship

Wow, yeah, that's not an option on any paperwork I've had.

Single, Married, Divorced, Widowed are the only options I've seen on any paperwork.

Some states are 7 years. That's if the law still exists.

Gotcha... I know some had different time requirements, couldn't remember if they were more or less than 10 years.

Yep, we can get in a lot of trouble if we're not claiming our taxes together as common law as well.

I kind of worry sometimes too, but so isn't a pos like Jaidis' doner and unless I cheated on him I don't th ink he'd leave me high and dry, but I still worry sometimes. It sucks when you handle all the finances and do all the billing mad keep stuff on track, but so is the one making money. I mean as lame as Jason comes off lol he seems to care at least.

exactly.
and sometimes it get annoying to think, i do 100% of the house work, like, the reason our house is always nice, is me- -jason is the reason that i need to clean and organize 24/7, haha, and it just makes me think--if we were to split, i would've been doing all of this for.....?

Well we're looking for a house right now and if it weren't for me putting money we wouldn't have anything saved. I make all the phone calls, fill out applications, make appointments, deal with his insurance, and once we get a place I'll be in charge of that too. I'm not complaining, but it would suck if we ended up splitting and I had nothing to show for any of it. I'm right there with you.
