Constipated newb.

posted 28th Dec
My son is 6 weeks old, and he's constipated, he passed a hard stool this morning. He is FF, he was on Enfamil Gentlease, but that seemed to not work for him, so now he's on Similac Sensitive.. I'm not sure if it's the formula? or him getting adjusted to it?
Anyway, I talked to my pediatrician, and she said using half prune juice and half water should help, or I could use a rectal thermometer to stimulate him. Using the thermometer didn't help..But using prune juice makes me feel anxious. Is it safe? What do you other mamas recommend?
Sorry about this jumbled post, not enough sleep.

The juice is 'safe' but only give half oz of each. Babies don't need that much to get them to go.

My son had the same problem at 6 weeks also i tried everything with him but for me the best thing to do was give him an enima (sp) It helped right away and after that he was fine. If you do plan on doing that it would be best to do it in the bathroom. I had to give my son a bath right after that.

We used prune juice on Zeke when he was around that age and it worked like a charm. Only give about 1 oz. juice with 1 oz. water at a time...if that works, you shouldn't need to use more.

It probably is the formula switch that is causing the constipation...hopefully it will clear up in a couple of days.

i always used the thermometer trick, but once i saw the doctor lube up her pinky and stimulate that way and my daughter filled up her diaper on the way home. lol
the prune juice is probably okay, but your baby is soo young still idk if i woudl use it yet, maybe as a last resort? good luck

When my LO was 6 weeks old I gave him 1 oz of straight pear juice and 20 mins later he filled his diaper and was 100% himself again! Every kid is different and if you are nervouse about it you could always start off with half an ounce! The other thing that worked for my LO was a long car ride (we actually went on a road trip so the first leg of the trip was like a 4 hour drive) I think the vibration helped it out.

If I do end up using the prune juice (or pear, and probably as a last resort) do I give it to him in between bottles? or in place of a bottle?

id say in between, or towards the end of a feeding? that way he doesnt get filled up on watered juice, and gets his formula.

I've heard of putting a tablespoon of corn syrup into their bottle then warm it up. Not to sure of doing it that young, but when my girls were older and FF it worked like a charm.

The formula is probably responsible. It has an additive for sensetive tummies that stops them up. We use gentle ease and it works great, but I don't give the full scoops, that allows a little extra water to get in their system to help keep things moving. It works great now, but in order to get her bowels moving initially we used half and half juice and water.

We used to give it in-between bottles.

watering down formula is very dangerous and can throw off babies electrolytes and cause seizures among other problems.. you should never do that.. O.o

I feel you on the anxieties with the juice.. I would do bicycle 'exercise' with the legs to stimulate things.. If that doesn't work the enema may be your best bet!
Good luck!
