School aged children

posted 28th Dec
At what age do u think children start to notice how other children are dressed. When does what you wear start to become "important"?

I remember it starting in 3rd grade, but it was a big deal by 5th grade.

I remember noticing things like that in around 6th grade. We were very very poor, and I remember that as when I started to really get made fun of.

Kindergarten. My oldest has told me about some of the things some of the girls have said to the other girls who don't wear nicer clothes.

Fourth or Fifth grade are when the kids started from what I can remember, now it seems by Pre-K all the \cool-rich' moms start before the kids even give a crap.

Goodness gracious.   I remember how heartbroken I was when I started to get made fun of, I can't imagine what it would have been like in K.

My kindergartener has mentioned it on several occasions (hopefully only to me) That some kids wear clothes too big/ small or have holes in them.

That's so sad - not that your daughter takes notice - it is only normal to recognize things that are different to what we know...but that there are still kids out there who don't have clothes that fit properly.

I think I thought of this question as in when did kids start making fun of...but taking notice? My 4 year old compliments her friends at PreCC on their clothes and shoes. She's never said anything about anyone who's clothes weren't "nice" though.

Yeah, um I'm not sure, she's not hateful so I don't think she would mention the other kids wearing ugly clothes if she was noticing. She's pointed out adults to me and her dad before and said rude things, I'm hopeful that we corrected it enough for her to not do that to children.

I remember for me it was like third grade when kids would gang up on other kids and tease them about clothing choices. I remember in 6th grade I wanted to wear things because other kids were making fun of my panty line, lol my mom was like "all I'm hearing Amanda, is that your pants are too tight" smurfing backfire!

I remember that, too. Middle school was worse than high school for me.
