Taken from the Scientific American Journal:
Why are the risks associated with exposure to third-hand smoke different for children and adults?
The developing brain is uniquely susceptible to extremely low levels of toxins. Remember how we talked about the layers of toxin deposits on surfaces? Who gets exposure to those surfaces? Babies and children are closer to [surfaces such as floors]. They tend to touch or even mouth [put their mouths to] the contaminated surfaces. Imagine a teething infant.
Children ingest twice the amount of dust that grown-ups do. Let's say a grown-up weighs 150 pounds [68 kilograms]. Let's say a baby weighs 15 pounds [seven kilograms]. The infant ingests twice the dust [due to faster respiration and proximity to dusty surfaces]. Effectively, they'll get 20 times the exposure.
Studies in rats suggest that tobacco toxin exposure is the leading cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). We think it is [caused by] respiratory suppression.

Quoting J&T+3:" Before I was pregnant I was a heavy smoker (a pack a day). A week after I found out I was pregnant I ... [snip!] ... is born, but I think I'm going to cave in. Did you find it easier to stay off them while pregnant, or after you had the baby?"
Now to the OP.... I quit like 5 months before I even got pregnant bc I just wanted to.... I found that during my pregnancy I craved cigarettes like nobody's business... It was insane LOL. I craved cigarettes and beer (which I normally hate). I just fought the urge and then when LO was born, I had a few issues with PPD when she was 4 weeks old and did go back to it for a little while. I found it hard to stay away from it. I eventually quite again after I regained my senses. Good luck... and as someone else said... if u breastfeed it makes it's a motivator to stay away

actually studies I have read do support an increased risk in SIDS in 3rd hand smoke also asthma, ear infections etc are increased

Thank you.
When you have 4000+ toxins including cyanide and lead lingering on furniture, clothes, hair, walls etc that are coming directly into contact with a baby it is bound to cause damage.

I used to smoke weed and cigars before I got pregnant. I quit many times including my first pregnancy. The thought of harming my child and how disgusted I am at seeing a pregnant woman smoke made me never pick one up during pregnancy. I have smoked weed outside while lo was sleeping 3 times pp but washed the clothes immediately and showered right after. I make a huge deal out of third hand smoke. We go to my dads house and he doesn't smoke while she is there but we leave reeking of it and have to shower immediately. Its disgusting to me how I ever did it. I used to wipe my walls and they would be brown from smoke.
You just gotta think of the risks to your lo and body.

Its definitely easier while pregnant.
I quit when I found out around 5 weeks pregnant, and started back up about 3 days after I had her.
I always craved cigarettes when I was pregnant though. My SO smokes too so I always had to smell it and I wanted one so bad

I didn't want my baby or my clothes to smell like cigs. So I haven't started back up since I quit when I got pregnant in 2010.

Lol pot smoke is nothing like cigarette smoke.
OP its much easier while pregnant, but right now you should go buy yourself an electronic cigarette. It's got nicotine in it but none of the harmful poisons that go along with cigarette smoke. You can just pick it up every time you get a bad craving and not worry about hurting the baby.

I just found out I'm pregnant and have had a hard time. I'm only a couple of weeks pregnant but just keep thinking about what ever you ingest, your baby does too.
I'm craving them soooo badly. Can't give in though. This is going to be hard, but all worth it of course.

Pot smoke doesn't have the toxins but does still have harmful carcinogens, so it's better to vape or eat

Agreed.
And honestly, I don't believe all the third hand smoke nonsense. Sure, it stinks, but I don't think it's harmful. Or if it is, it's very minuscule.

It has nothing to do with the smell. The smoke stays in your hair, clothes, on your skin, on the walls, floor, in furniture. Etc. When you pick a baby up after you've smoked and put them on your shoulder, they're inhaling cigarette smoke. It's disgusting and it does cause asthma, SIDS, etc.

I just don't believe it's as dangerous or any more risky than other chemicals people use everyday.

we don't use cyanide every day! unless you happen to work in the chemical weapons industry.
