I don't think thats true. You have people like my dad whose been severely handicapped since birth. He does not have the ability to go through college (he was oxygen deprived until age 3, he has severe memory issues, concentration issues and coordination issues from that alone - he will literally sit there and tell you the same thing 3 times in a row and couldn't tell you what the commercial was about that he JUST watched and paid attention to). He has attempted to go through college twice, he has part of a marketing degree and part of a nursing degree, he was just NOT able to keep up, at all. He is physically incapable of lifting over 10lbs, he is on medications that give him grand mal seizures, migraines multiple days out of the week.....no one would ever hire him and KEEP him. He has literally been house bound my entire life and I can tell you, it's not by choice, he feels like a piece of smurf for having his wife be the main bread winner.

My dad recently turned 50 (he's the oldest person in the US with his condition, he was the first person in our country to survive the surgery to fix his condition) and he looked into trying to do an online class because he was curious and he really does want to learn....no one would touch him with a 10ft pole with a loan. Luckily my parents are doing really well now since my mom opened her salon and my mom was able to pay out of pocket for it.....he ended up flunking out because he couldn't keep up, but still.....no one would give him a chance.

I'm sorry =( That's so frustrating. So many hardworking people get snuffed all the time because of disabilities. It's maddening when people say things like, "Well, they should just suck it up. I know a guy who knows someone's mother's friend who lost three limbs in a shark attack and even she was able to get a lucrative job on the inspirational speeches circuit so anyone should be able to do anything at any time!!1"

Yeah...but you stated you don't think there is a disability that can't be worked with - in our world, what would he be able to realistically do? It's not cut and dry. I don't think there are things that can be worked with in a reasonable way.

Oh, it's true. Whats really frustrating is that my dad is upright and CAN walk, you can't SEE his disabilities with his clothes on (you WILL notice because he is highly awkward) but just looking at him with clothes on, you wouldn't know. People judge him all the time for it. He's learned to kind of just accept that people don't understand.

Yes I have a good case at getting disability. Something I never really thought of doing, though. I worked with a man who was a quadrapoligic (no use of arms or legs). He (well, me, actually) got his ass out of bed every day so he could go to work. I have a bit of a skewed version of what really makes someone unable to be employed because of him.

That irks me. Our country is finally at a point where people with disabilities are able to get an education with the help that they need to get through it....just in time for my dad to be middle aged. Because of his medical problems, his family was dirt poor (like living in a hotel kind of poor and selling their possessions for a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread) and that kind of education just wasn't available to him. I think that someone with his issues NOW could probably make it through, but unfortunately, I think it's too late for my dad.

Yes, but the reality is, unless the person is exceptional at what they do, most companies are going to give the job to someone who is equally as qualified who they DON'T have to accommodate. It hate it, but that's how it is.

There is disabilities that you simply can't work with. I actually work with people with learning disabilities and people need to look after them. They don't know what day it is, what time, when to go to bed, how to dress, some can't speak, aren't able to make a simple choice about what to have for dinner, wouldn't eat if you didn't tell them they had to, can't turn a washing machine on, don't know what a hairbrush is, can be physically violent..... Very seriously mentally disabled. When people are getting paid to look after them and that's their job then the people with the disabilities sure can't work.

i could get disability, but i don't. it would be fraud; i'm able to work.
and i think it's important that my daughter sees me providing for her by working, not collecting gov't aid.

I have scoliosis, Hidradenitis suppurativa, arthritis and chronic migraines.I use to work but now am a stay at home mom, and I do plan on working again.

I have depression, severe anxiety and borderline personality disorder. I have a history of in and out hospital stays and emergency visits. I could very well qualify for disability but choose not to. I feel that since I am able-bodied and high functioning that I should work. I currently hold two jobs and have three and half years of continuous employment.
