Autism Class vs. Regular class

posted 27th Dec
My son is in a Autism classroom, Every child in the class is autistic.
I''m starting to feel like they are holding him back. My son potty's at home, while he is at school they do not inforce it (using the excuse that he has autism and they dont think he's ready but my son is using it at home)! Im frustrated because I repeat myself SO MUCH!

I'm thinking of pulling him out and asking to change his schools or program. I also even thought about sending him back to day care for a full day so I can go back to work.

So I guess my question is do u ladies think it would be a smart decision?

I wouldn't pull him just yet. Bring it up to a school principal and let them know that the teachers are disregarding what you're telling them. Then if they continue to not listen to you, talk with a case manager to ask for other options. I wouldn't pull him out randomly without a back up plan (other than day care). I say this because I don't think a child with autism is going to thrive in daycare alone (my son is autistic also).

Here, they don't have special ed classes anymore, it's all inclusive. I find it works best that way, for both the special needs kids and the "normal" kids. They learn from each other.

My son is 5 with autism and in a langauge enrichment program. It's designed for 3-4 yr olds, but I made the choice to hold him back from kindergarten until next year. He's doing great in it!

This is what I was thinking. Only because the potty training wasnt my only issue!

I think it mainly depends on how "severe" he is. If he's a kid that can't handle not having an aide all the time (like my son), there's no way a regular classroom would benefit him. But if you think he would be fine without the aide or as much one on one, talk to someone about your options.

Here, we get one on one aides in the regular rooms. Works awesome

If the teachers are not working with him on generalizing this skill then I would call an I.E.P. meeting. You have the right to call one at anytime during the year and I would request that they establish goals and objectives for potty training at school! You can also request for him to be transferred to a new school that has the program if you are comfortable with him being in that program. Good luck!
