Steroids & Rash

posted 27th Dec
My 21 month old had an allergic reaction to amoxicllin starting Tuesday! Took him back & got different antibiotic & steroids (prednisolone)! They gave him a dose of the steroid there & by the time we left his rash was waaaaaay better!! Well they sent him home with a 4 day prescription. Took his 2nd dose today & now his face and shoulders is starting to get the rash develop again. Called pharmacist since its late and doc aint in. He said it might be cuz the amoxcillin might still be in his system and the steroid is wearing down! (cant give another dose till tomorrow) Have you ever experienced this with your LO? On top of it all he is doing is pretty much sleeping the past few days. He cant catch a break   He has a double ear infection & sore throat!

Is he on a non penicillin antibiotic for the other stuff?
Yes I've experienced it! It does take a while the amoxicillin builds up in the system.
Is he on antihistamine too??

Check the antibiotic is non penicillin, call pharmadist and ask if he can take an oral antihistamine with the steroid.

I don't know, I'm not in the us, our names are different. I think you'll find your son is allergic to penicillin, which is in amoxicillin. They most likely gave him a non penicillin one now- but I'd check to make sure. Call the chemist again and ask re that and if you can give an oral children's antihistamine like children's claryntine

You take it as an adult for allergies, like bee stings, hay fever etc
There are children's ones. Clarentyne is non drowsy. Ones like fernergan for kids makes them very drowsy.
I have clarentyne with the redipred steroid for my sons penecilin allergy. But ask!!

so the steroid wasnt just helping you had to use the clarentyne as well? I have heard of bendaryl. I wonder if thats the same?!

It's weird. He'd had penicillin b4 and was fine. Then on like the third day he broke out in a rash and it quickly turned into hives, swollen lips and face and wheezing.
He was given injections at the hospital then oral steroids at home for a week. Giving antihistamine worked well and each dose lasts 24 hours.
But your child is under two so I'm not sure.
Tell your family dr, day care etc he must never be prescribed penicillin, each reaction is worse than the last.
Calamine lotion helped.

The steroid really helped but I think his was injected at hospital. The steroid is the best I used clarentyne as I'd used it with him for other stuff.
Ask the dr though, my son is older.

Just looked at your hives post. Yes it looked like that in mine, but 100x worse!
If he's not having trouble breathing and his face, mouth and lips are not swelling I'd just stick with the steroid. Do ask about antihistamine though.
