Toddler with O- Blood anyone else?

posted 27th Dec
My 2 1/2 y.o has O- blood and in the beginning it wasn't a big deal to me but now that he is more active and accident prone it scares me. I don't want to keep my son in a bubble. There isn't anyone that's O- in the family, just O+. Also a friends nephew needed a blood transfusion who was O- and if he didn't get it he would die. I really don't want to worry myself.

Being O- doesn't make a person more fragile or anything, it just means he has a less common blood type. Definitely don't keep him in a bubble. The chances that he will get hurt to the point he'd NEED a blood transfusion are pretty slim at this point, barring any horrific accident and whatnot. Just let him be a boy. He will get scrapes and bruises, and possible broken bones as he goes through life, but those don't require transfusions.

I am A+ and DH is O+. I never found out what either of my kids are  I should go ask their doctor just so I know.

It will depend on what alleles YOU got. If you got an A and an O allele, then your kids will either be A or O..if you only got two A alleles, your kids are A. I'm O+ and my SO is A+, and I don't know what our kids our, but my youngest is O+ because her dad was O+ as well, so there was no chance she could be anything else.

My husband is. The chances of your child needing a blood transfusion are pretty low. I mean scrapes and broken bones are pretty much apart of childhood and blood type will have no bearing on that.

Thank You. I'm just worried because he wants to ride skateboards and he is so extreme with some activities. =/ should I worry when he's a teen and in sports? -_- I just want to settle these feelings.

No, I wouldn't even worry then. You will always worry about your kids, of course, but the chances of that degree of accident playing sports are extremely rare. Even if he breaks a bone, a transfusion more than likely won't be necessary. He'd only need a transfusion if he's ever in a situation where he loses a lot of blood. They might pull some in case he needs a transfusion if he ever has surgery, but blood banks do try to keep O- on hand, and if it's a scheduled surgery, you might even ask about taking some of his own blood ahead of time so they have it on hand for him.

Thank you!   I feel better.
