The time out rule?

posted 27th Dec
At what age do you stop following the 'one minute per year of age ' rule?

Does a 4 year old still only get 4 minutes in time out? What about a five or six year old?

My 4 year old gets 4 minutes, it seems to be the perfect amount of time for her. I figure I'll change it up once it stops working.

I was watching Super Nanny last night and she was putting an 11 year old in timeout for 11 minutes.

I still do the whole 1 min per year rule with my 4 year old however I tell her that her time does not start untill she is quiet and if she gets up or starts talking her time starts all over again usually time outs end up being about 6 mins after having to get after her once or twice but it seems to work.....good luck

Depends on when it stops working  Right now it is pretty effective with my 22 month old but once it stops working then I will figure out something else like taking toys away or doing another thing like a reward system.

I think my brother stopped getting time-outs at 3 and then it was taking away toys. With my sister and I it was "Go to your room and don't come out until it is clean) since we both always had messy rooms so that was our punishment, among other things that I will never do to my kids.

Ditto here. We don't start the time until she's behaving properly, and the time will be re-started if she tries to leave the spot or something.

I usually just tell Alyssa to go to her room and she can come out when she is done crying/yelling/disobeying.

Sometimes she will sit in her room for 30 seconds and other times she will sit in there for 30 minutes. But she knows she has permission to come out when she is ready to listen.

My 5 year old still gets 5 min. But he almost never gets time outs anymore. He is just a really well behaved kid.
