Normal? (answers please)

posted 27th Dec
Ok so my baby boy is exactly a week old today and I've been noticing he is breathing really heavy sometimes, and he is snorting like he is stuffed up. I've tried using the blue bulb shringe the hospital gave to suck the snot out of his nose but not much comes out but is him breathing heavy and snorting normal? are any of you other momma's having this problem?

My pedi told me that's just how babies breath. Sometimes they hold their breath and need to catch up. You could try a cool mist humidifier and some baby saline drops but as long as he has no fever or anything else I think he's ok. Your dr doesn't have a nurses line for you to call if its after hours or he's away?
Good luck and congrats.

Did they gave you a number when they released you from the hospital. Look through all your papers. Is hard to tell but I would def call.

Congrats on your LO, I just had my baby boy on the 10th.

Anyways, I was concerned that he was having trouble breathing because he also breaths very heavy when he sleeps. I talked to his pedi. about it at his one week appointment & he said that it is completely normal. That eased my mind a lot. The only time he ever really snorts though is when he is stretching or if he is about to eat (he gets all excited).

newborns often have what is called periodic breathing, which is normal......they will kind of have a pause in breathing followed by rapid breathing and sometimes they will snort during the rapid breathing or when they startle. That is all very normal.

Now, if you notice any nasal flaring, or sucking in around the ribs or constant rapid breathing you'll want to definitely seek medical attention. And obviously if there are any color changes associated with the breathing patterns, like a blue or greyish color.

and if all else fails, just call the doc or whoever is on call for the doc if for nothing else but your peace of mind   Congrats!

My son is 11 weeks old and he has done it sense he has been born. But I asked my doctor and they gave him meds and it didn't help.
