BAD tantrums.

posted 27th Dec
I have a 3 year old little boy who throws the worst fits I have ever seen. He will throw things at me, spit in my face, tell me he doesn't like me, and kick and hit me, and even scream at the top of his lungs when he doesn't get his way. I have tried every possible thing I know to try. Time out, having a talk about it, and as much as I hate to say I have even spanked him and smacked his hand, taken toys away, everything! Does anyone else's child do this and what are some things you have tried? I am in desperate need of help with this!

Being consistent with punishments is the best thing to do...toddlers NEED consistency. I have a 3 1/2 year old and he's never thrown tantrums like that before, but when he does let his mouth get the best of him, something my husband and I started doing was giving him a spoon-full of apple cider vinegar. It's REALLY healthy for them, but it tastes HORRIBLE and they NEVER want it! My son always worries about vinegar before he speaks now! Lol. good luck mama!

girl....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

i would honestly ingore him when we are home... as soon as he starts with that u tell him he has exactly 5 seconds to calm it down, and hush it up before you leave him right where he is and go out. trick is u have to do it!!! and as soon as he realizes that you are serious after the first 5ish times u do it, he'll quit. take whatever he is crying about with u btw

I have tried to stay with one punishment but none of them seem to work. The closest I get is sending him to his room and giving him quiet time and I tell him he can't come out until he is done throwing his fit and does what he was told. But I feel like a horrible person for making my 3 old sit in his room alone...he does calm down and he has even apologized afterwards so I know he understands what he is doing. I just feel like there is something better I could do.

When my daughter had tantrums at home I would stick her on her bed and leave her there. She knew she wasn't going to get the attention she wanted and would stop. There is no reasoning with a child that has gotten that far gone. If she threw a fit in public I would drop what we were doing and go home.

Alyssa has only gotten that bad a handful of times.

The first time she has ever done that, I was at my wits end and were pretty much in your shoes. She didn't get to the extent of spitting, but I was pregnant, and she was hitting and kicking at my belly.

I finally just walked away from her (She wouldn't stay in timeout), and ignored her for about 20 - 30 minutes. Even after she had stopped. It seemed to have broken her heart when I didn't respond to her even once she was calm. She knew I was angry at her behavior.

I'd try to get to the bottom of why he is throwing the tantrum. Talk to him about it, ask him questions and really make it seem like you care. Things that are small to us adults, are a big deal to 3 year olds.

DD is 3 too, and she has tantrums regularly (though nothing like you explained), most of the time, talking to her calms things down. I have to say things like "I know it's frustrating that you cannot have an ice cream cone right now. I know you're mad, but, if you eat all your dinner, you can have one after". Acknowledge his feelings and try to find a solution.

There is never a time that I don't feel bad for punishing my son. You're ALWAYS going to feel bad about it, but you HAVE to do it to make sure they become good little people   It's hard, but be consistent and don't show him that you're sad or scared about it. You have to be REALLY firm, as much as it hurts you, you have to.

I guess I will stick with the time out but I will never make him drink something nasty I feel like that is completely wrong! Just my opinion. He gets these tantrums because he has to spend weekends with his father and his fathers parents and they give him everything he wants and he has NEVER been told no by them. I stopped him from going for a long time but now it is court ordered for him to go. They don't realize they are making it hard on me and HIM but they don't care. I can't talk to him when he acts like that because that is when he starts the hitting, kicking, and spitting and I am pregnant with my second child so I can't sit there and let it happen. I guess if the time out and ignoring him works for other parents and their kids then I am not as bad as of person as I thought for leaving him alone when he is like that. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Well, to each their own... but I am not hurting my son in any way and I am not giving him anything that would harm him, so I'd say calling it "completely wrong" is a bit of a reach, but we're all entitled to our own opinions! Good luck to ya!
