Guess it's just different over here.. A fast food meal here is about $5 while a good one is like $10..

We have the same here. We were disappointed the first time we went, the produce was NOT good. But then we went another time and wow... that crap was SO fresh, we got the biggest eggplant we ever have had (I love eggplant sandwiches, eggplant parmesan, veggie tacos) and it was so freaking big and fresh. All organic too. Organic really is the freshest and best you can get but it sucks it can be a lot more expensive. At the farmers market its dirt cheap!

So whenever the Golden Farmer's Market is open we go because as you said they accept food stamps AND they give you a card that is like a loyalty card. It has things like "Buy 2 bags of produce get 1 free" or "Get a bag of apples free with a 5$ purchase" and other things. You can wait to use those benefits, so we get those deals and then stack them on a big haul and get tons of fruit and veggies for practically free.

Ya know what I hate? That most stores sell absolute smurf plums. Plums are my favorite fruit... and in most supermarkets they are sour and tasteless. So when we go to the farmers market they are so sweet! But I hate that the farmers markets are only a few times a year and I dont get yummy plums throughout the year

We eat very cheaply, but we use a barter system at the market. My grandparents give us five to ten bushels of wheat a year and I trade that for produce and save some for bread and pastries. They also give us 20 or so gallons of goat milk a month and they give DH a dozen eggs every other week.

We might spend $100 a month on food and going strict vegan has helped keep that cost low.

I can't wait to go to India where a full street meal is less than a dollar ortrade for one or two American cigarettes.

It's ridiculous. I receive food stamps, I go to the store and buy things like tea, juice, chicken, ground beef, oatmeal, fruit and etc. I rarely go out to fast food places with my EBT card, but I guess a lot of other people do differently.

I can go to the store and chicken for like $2 a package most times. A package of rice is like 1, and a can of veggies would be $1 too. It's all about making a budget and not buying unnecessary crap.

The farmers markets here have outrageously priced foods.
You have to go to the produce wholesaler-type places.
We go to the farmers markets to support the locals but the food is often nearly double the grocery store price.

I don't go to the one here in town, but a smaller one just south of here in a town of about 2000, all farmers. They've had the same market since the town was founded and pretty much everyone there is related in some way. Those are some good prices and you can usually talk them into a "cousin" price. My grandparents are from there and about half the town is related to us in some way. Hell, my Grandpa's sister married my Grandma's brother. It's one of those towns where the funeral director is the cabinet maker and the butcher and he wears Wranglers and boots to the funeral.

Omg you cannot smurfing believe that. Feminism has made people eat crappy? You are out of your smurfing mind. It isn't a woman's JOB to cook. A man is just as capable as a woman and should learn the same smurf she does. And I'm a feminist to the core and I know how to cook, as do all 3 of my sisters, my mother, my aunt, and my grandmother. Not that it is our job to do so. You are a misogynist and it's not cool. People like you are what's wrong with the world.

Yes women shun cooking because of feminism *Rolls eyes*. How about the men learn the basics themselves :-P?

My bf's mom can't cook for smurf. But it has nothing to do with feminism. You know what? HIS DAD IS A GREAT COOK. Look at that, men aren't so helpless after all!

My husband can't cook for smurf.

But he opens a jar like a pro ;)

I'm a feminist...I taught him to cook meat well, but sides and starches are yet to come.
