re: Welfare and Obesity

posted 28th Dec
Honestly I do think that there should be some sort of nutritional class. I just don't see it as being viable. It'll turn into a pamphlet. Like this whole rule in California that everyone recieving non assistance food stamps (those who also don't get cash aid) has to be provided with a family planning service and "counseled" on family planning   Or the whole bullsmurf that you can request to register to vote at any social services branch. Or that you have to be offered information on CHDP (some sort of children's medical benefits something or other). OR the fact that an ORIGINAL citizenship doccument must be SIGHT VERIFIED for those who are not exempt and we cannot look up in our system. Seriously, there are so many damn rules and regulations that have to be budgeted for. I don't see it as being viable or relevent. Especially with the high volume of cases. And don't get me started on the kind of doccumentation involved with those receiving cash aid and those requirements.

For a typical household this is what the end of my journal entry at the end of the day is "DRA met (citizenship), IEVS- reviewed, no discrepancies (really the only useful thing here, it's a report that gives employment/unemployment benefit/ SSI/SSP/ social security info on every individual). No special needs indicated for disability/language services. Rights and responsibilities reviewed. Pub 13 (california rights for welfare recipeints pamphlet)/275 (family planning pamphlet)/CHDP information given. Voter registration declined, ABAWD (work program requirement for adults without dependents) exempt county" << All things already requied by law on top of the regular eligiblity requirements for income and resources. If they speak a different language we have to doccument what that language is and how their need will be met in our office

Seriously, it'll come up as just another pamphlet that will have to be handed out. Won't be useful, just will end up in the trash.

Eh. You are probably right. Maybe there could be a pop quiz

If they switch to something WIC-style plus having food depots, that would help.

In some cases. In most cases it is at least indicative of the quality/quantity of food they eat.

I think they should do it like wic. If someone is obese they can lower the starches and increase produce. If people want to eat crap they can do it with their own money.

It's a valuable piece of info but not an absolute.

I think we should just switch to a commodity program period. Get a box of food a week there.ya go.
The commodity program here offers really good nutritional food.

That's exactly what I would do. Don't like it? Fine, starve or find a way to feed yourself.

Yep, that's how it works. How it is in this county is you can get comods or foodstamps. Honestly, you get more value with the comods. We got comods for our girls when I worked in a group home. Fresh meat, fruit, veggies, etc. Their strawberries were so fresh last year. They typically provide the food from local farms and seasonal if they can. Occassionally there were treats thrown in. If you told them it was your child's birthday the month before they'd make sure they had a birthday cake for them.

I'd support that in MOST places as i think that worked well decades ago and is the most efficient and provides the most value.
BUT, there would be an access issue for some geographies.
And, of course, since their is a VERY loud crowd the will object to the stigma, it would be a challenge to accomplish. We have gone WAY out of the way to make people comfortable in their dependence.

Damn straight we have. I think it would also cut waaaaaay down on fraud (ie. people moving and not telling us, not being a resident and getting it from our county, that's our biggest "fraud", selling foodstamps, etc). I know that for the elderly they distribute their comods w/ the meals on wheels team once a month. Maybe set something like that up. The fact is is that foodstamps is supposed to be a SUPPLEMENTAL program, just like WIC. But it's often used as the only source of a person or family's food.
