ouch! latching advice, please!

posted 26th Dec
How in the world do I get a proper latch? My LO is 3 days old and tearing my nipples apart. I feel like her mouth is too tiny :/

I do the hamburger squish lol Idk the 'proper' word for it but it helped to make sure that he wasn't just hanging out on the tip. Also see if her lips look like fish lips. If not take her off and try again

Try positioning your nipple in front of her nose instead of in front of her mouth, that'll help her open wider.. Also, don't lean over to give her the boob, try to lean back and bring her to your boob instead so that it doesn't hurt your back or she doesn't slide when you lean back to get comfortable. Make sure her lips are poked out and your nipple is far enough back in her mouth. It should be all the way back in the soft palate (run your tongue along the roof of your mouth, where it suddenly dents in and goes soft is where your nipple should be in her mouth). Also, they might be a little tender anyways because your breasts aren't used to all this.

well the first 2 weeks they will be sensitive but you need to get the full nipple and some of the areola in babies mouth. I would pinch your breast about 1 inch above your nipple (like a sandwich) then tickle her nose and move your nipple downward (this should get her to open up wide) then pull her mouth onto breast getting all of your nipple and the areola in her mouth as possible. They do have small mouths but with practice and time you should be able to get the latch down. I also did lanolin before and after feeding and even allow your breasts to air dry to help with any sore nipples.

Does she keep spitting it out? My son would do that and I had to keep trying over and over.Do you have lanolin or coconut oil to put on after feedings?

I have also used my pinky finger to pull her lips outward if they are turned in. All else fails pinky finger to break suction and try again

Make sure your nipple is lined up with LO's nose so she has to open wide & reach type deal lol kinda suck at explaining..& if she's not latched correctly, break the latch & try again. When she's done feeding, rub sine breast milk on your nipples and let them air dry & then apply the Lanolin  good luck!! I'm almost 3 weeks into it. The first week was rough but it gets soo much better

Nope. The second she gets a hold, she does not let go until she's full. She has proper lip positioning, both stick out like fish lips. I've been using medela nipple cream religiously. Have coconut oil, too I just didn't know I could use it for that.
