I have a question. Has anyone ever had a problem with having their dr do something for their child? My daughter wakes up at night screaming like someone is killing her. Her dr says it's nightmares or night terrors, I know what these are like cause both my husband and I had them when we were younger and grew out of that stage. This is something completely different, she's been waking up like this for about 6 months now and it is very tiring. Sometimes she wakes up like she can't breathe. I don't know what to do and it feels like I'm just wasting my breathe at the dr. I need any advice on what to do or who to go to. Thank you in advance.

Is she out of breath from screaming or is she gasping for air? If it's from screaming that is night terrors and they grow out of it eventually. If she's gasping for air she may have sleep apnea.

If your current dr won't listen to you, find a new one. It's important that you have one that will take your concerns seriously.

We're military it's hard to get our dr switched fast enough to get it taken care of and then if I take her to someone other then her Primary then they won't do anything.

My son was having night terrors for nearly two months before we figured it out. We had to turn tv off, make it quiet time for a full hour before bed.. No playing, nothing. Their mind needs to be completely relaxed. We also cut sugar out, no desserts. And if she's missing naps she can be getting overly tired which also triggers terrors.

I've done all of that and she still wakes up screaming.

i would try getting the doctor to do a sleep study on her. you said your husband has sleep apnea?
is this affecting her while she's awake too? because i know sleep apnea will cause all kinds of issues when awake from lack of real sleep.
watch her sleep for a while....maybe with your hand on her belly and try to see if she stops breathing at all. although...i've done this with my son and every once in a while he will have a short 3 or so second pause in breathing but he doesnt wake up gasping. i think what he's doing is normal breathing patterns.

No but when it happens it takes like an hr almost 2 to get her to calm down. And then after shes calm shes up forever and wont go back to sleep

My boys have night terrors and their doc said they grow out of it at about eight 8. But it can recurre again at age 10 and last til around 12. He said growth spurts is a cause of them. Record your child sleeping like someone else mentioned and take it to the doc. If she's gasping for air it def does sound like sleep apnea. My nephew has it and he's 2. He's sleeping better now that they are controlling it.

She is putting in for a referral and doing a study to make sure its not sleep apnea. She's also suggested to give her melatonin to help get her into a good sleep habit
