Someone got me on the SIDS kick again...

posted 24th Dec
Just when I started to relax
I give birth in 6 weeks and someone told me that not only is sids more common in teen pregnancy, but even more so in subsequent teen pregnancies.
Needless to say, I'm 18, had my first son february 1st 2011, and am currently freaking the hell out.

I was directed to this website :
http://stopsidsnow.com/Orders.html

It says SIDS is really only preventable with this mattress cover and with his due date nearing in I can't afford it...

Why obsess over something you have no control over?

Asteroids kill people, bird flu kills people, drive by shootings, vending machines, etc. But you're not worried about those. Stop wasting perfectly good time worrying about something you can't prevent.

I'd say the only reason SIDS is higher in teen parenting because they don't know any better

SIDS is completely random and all you can do to "prevent" it is basic things like making sure your baby doesn't have any pillows or bulky blankets.

A cover isn't going to prevent SIDS either.....The cause of SIDS is unknown.

SIDS is not preventable. You can supposedly lessen the chances of it happening by following certain guidelines.
I lost a brother to SIDS. He slept in a crib with no thick blankets or bumper guards. Your best bet is to stop worrying or invest in some kind of sensor monitor.

If god forbid such a thing happened, a mattress cover wouldn't prevent it. Try not to obsess over it. Sending you good thoughts!

It's sad but true, just selfish companies trying to make money off of parents worrying. Like she said, don't obsess over it.

Only sure way to prevent your kids from dying in strange, unexplainable ways is not to have them.

I am scared to death of SIDS so both of my babies bed share with me until they are weaned. I didnt get any sort of fancy mattress pad, different sheets or of the sort. I just sleep lighter and make sure there are no pillows around where he sleeps.

The monitors that you can put under baby do ease your minds BUT they are pricey as hell and I ended up not using mine after about 2-3 weeks.

A mattress cover will not prevent it. The cause of SIDS is unknown. If you are very worried about it get a movement monitor that will alert you if baby stops breathing

I can't sleep without the movement monitor on. I lost my first daughter last November to undiagnosed heart defects, and she stopped breathing in her crib. I'm paranoid.
